Infrastructure construction including the Rooppur nuclear power plant, Karnaphuli river tunnel, Dhaka metro rail, Matarbari power plant, and the Padma Bridge project were also suspended when the virus started spreading in the country. Thus, affecting the growth of the sector in 2020. However, with the resumption of construction activities and the economy opening up again, the construction industry is expected to recover during the next 8 quarters.
However, the growing demand for affordable housing, better healthcare facilities, resumption of infrastructure projects, and the setup of industrial zones in expected to support the recovery of the construction industry in 2021.
The increasing population of the country is expected to be the primary driver of the residential market over the next decade. However, to fulfill the demand for the affordable housing segment in the country, the government will have to put in substantial investment in the sector.
The Bangladeshi government is planning to boost manufacturing exports from the country to US$50 billion per year by 2021. As a result, growth in industrial construction is expected to boost the construction industry as a whole. To boost garment manufacturing in the country, the government has also funded two villages - one in Mirsarai City and another in Gazaria City.
Alongside the industrial sector, construction activities in these two villages will also support the growth of residential and institutional facilities such as schools and hospitals in the country. Meanwhile, the government is also focusing on creating 100 special economic zones in the country. Consisting of tourism zones, townships, and industrial parks, the establishment of economic zones will also boost the construction sector in Bangladesh.
Economic growth and demographic changes are driving increased demand for healthcare services in the country. Rising demand for healthcare services in tier-two cities, as well as rural areas, has resulted in the development of the healthcare system in the country.
Various public hospitals that are funded by the government are undergoing upgrades and expansion activities in their facilities. Moreover, with increasing income and poor quality of public healthcare system, patients are turning to private healthcare providers in the country. As a result, spending on private healthcare is continuously growing in the country. Outlook for the sector remains positive in the mid-to-short term.
Infrastructure construction activities have resumed again as the country comes out of the coronavirus lockdown. The construction of a deep-sea port at the Matarbari has started again. This will support the recovery of the infrastructure sector in 2021.
Additionally, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has also agreed to provide funding of US$100 million in loans to the government for improving the rural road network. Valued at US$449.23 million, the project of improvement of rural roads in 34 districts across Bangladesh is expected to be completed by 2024.
ADB has also approved a grant of US$200 million for the construction of a power distribution project in Bangladesh. The spending on this project will support the recovery of the sector in 2021.
