TMT M&A Forum announces return to London as multiple factors drive deals
International telecom, finance and advisory experts are meeting in London for the second TMT M&A Forum on March 14 2013 to assess how mergers and acquisitions will drive change in telecoms, media and technology globally. The sector-leading forum takes place during a busy period for transactions globally. Telecom operators are looking to realign business models and geographic portfolios through sales and new investments, and private equity businesses and new market investors are back pursuing a range of deals.
“Across the globe, telcos such as Orange, MTN, Bharti and KPN are selling off tower assets to monetise network assets, at the same time as looking to invest in pockets of growth potential and consolidation,” said Darragh Stokes, Managing Partner, Hardiman Telecommunications, a leading global telecom advisory business. “Private equity also continues to grow its presence in the market, with this trend likely to increase in the coming 12 months. All these factors are working in parallel to create a really interesting market with significant opportunities for M&A but also with operational challenges to address,” he said.
Emerging market investors have also been targeting European telecoms, with Mexico’s Carlos Slim of America Movil, and Egypt’s Naguib Sawiris, former owner of Orascom, bidding for assets in Austria, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. New technology and the pursuit of new profit lines are also driving a range of deals.
“There are a few big deals such as Vivendi and Cable & Wireless…and I see joint ventures – for instance around network sharing – becoming even trendier in the year to come, while portfolio reshaping is still on the agenda,” said Thierry Levenq, Head of Telecoms, Corporate Finance, KPMG. “There are also a handful of countries where consolidation opportunities remain, such as Spain. Web-hosting, cloud services, M2M and VAS will also continue to be major drivers in deals, as telcos look to monetise new services and search for new growth areas to offset declining legacy revenues.”
TMT M&A Forum 2013 brings together the leading telecom, media and technology executives, investors, investment bankers and specialist advisers for a series of leadership panel discussions and keynote speeches . Key session themes include: Telecoms Growth Strategies; Future of TMT; Infrastructure Ownership; Spectrum and Regulation; CFO Round Table, Raising Finance and Media and Convergence. TMT M&A Forum 2013 takes place on Thursday, March 14 at Millennium Hotel London Mayfair.
