Ulm University Hospital is very satisfied with the core operating management system

Reducing operation times and easier surgical procedures by using the latest operating technology were the objectives that the hospital management at Ulm University Hospital wanted to achieve with the introduction of a new operating management system. The management joined forces with purchasers and surgeons to review a range of different operating systems. Ultimately, the choice was made to adopt the core operating system supplied by medical technology company Richard Wolf. This system is already being used in more than 400 hospitals and more than 20 countries worldwide. Since the middle of July, 15 new operating theaters have come onstream with the management system. And all the personnel involved are extremely satisfied.

“The product and service provided by Richard Wolf complied with the key requirements of procurement. The system meets the high requirements of users. Significant time resources were expended in installing the cabling and setting up the complex interfaces to other information systems. Our expectations were entirely satisfied and we fully endorse our decision to purchase core in all respects,” commented Martin Miller, Manager of the Department for Materials Management at the University Hospital, in a summary of his experiences with the operating management system.

The employees of Richard Wolf worked together with the responsible managers at the hospital to develop a concept that harmonized the individual needs of the hospital. This approach took account of the fact that the surgical department at the hospital wished to continue using its inventory of relatively innovative surgical instruments whereas the instruments used in telemedicine and imaging were to be completely modernized. “Ultimately, a key issue for adopting core was the flexibility provided for seamless integration of our existing equipment into the operating management system. This included operating tables, surgical lamps and high-frequency equipment which had not been supplied by Richard Wolf”, according to Miller.

The time factor was a particular challenge for equipping the operating theaters. Richard Wolf only required nine months from the initial consultation to the handover of the systems, including all installation work in the 15 operating theaters. Intensive training for surgeons and theater personnel was carried out in parallel. These staff members were also very satisfied after two months of practical testing with the new operating management system: “All equipment in the operating theaters can now be controlled intuitively using a touchscreen. The ergonomic configuration of the equipment reduces strain on the backs and eyes of users. We are able to record and archive operations, and transfer them over the network inside the hospital. Display on a range of 26-inch screens yields a very impressive solution for provision of all necessary patient information,” was the conclusion of Professor Florian Gebhard, Medical Director of Accident Surgery at the University Hospital, as he summarized the experiences of the surgeons with core.
