Esquire Magazine Announces Malaysia's Best Dressed Real Men

After three months of Esquire Malaysia’s “Best Dressed Man Malaysia” (BDRM) competition, one that saw over 200 entrants bear the full weight of a panel of fashion experts, winners were announced in dramatic style at KL’s hottest new venue, The Circus. With prizes totaling over RM20,000, competition was keenly contested and the final decision agonized over by the expert panel.

This is the second year of Esquire Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man, a Malaysian take on the popular Esquire UK’s “Britain’s Best Dressed Real Man”. The contestants send their pictures looking stylish and fashionable to be critiqued by a panel of judges. They were then invited to come to two judging evenings where they were interviewed by the judges, at the exclusive Lustro and Wardrobe locales, two of the sponsors. The esteemed experts making the tough decisions were: Sam Coleman - Editor in Chief Esquire Malaysia & Esquire Singapore; Leong Wong – Watch Editor, Fashion Writer, Esquire Malaysia & Esquire Singapore; Jason Lim – Fashion Writer, Esquire Malaysia; Lim Fang Heng – CEO, Wardrobe; Tracie Sudesh – Creative Director, Lustro; and Rudy La Faber – The winner of the inaugural Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man in 2011.

In total, the judges assessed over 200 entrants based on merit and personal style. “It was an amazing turn out. I was really impressed by the level of fashion knowledge and confidence. It bodes well for the development of men’s fashion in Malaysia, something that Esquire is championing as the foremost men’s fashion and lifestyle title,” said Sam Coleman of the competition.

Prizes on offer for the winners include: bespoke tailored suits by Wardrobe, vouchers for luxury fashion brand Lustro, Leica cameras, Storm London watches, and Penhaligon perfumes. In addition, all five of those to reach the final shortlist, from which the eventual winner would be chosen, were the subjects of a photoshoot that appears in the November 2012 issue of Esquire Malaysia, inside which the winner will also be revealed.

Supporting partner for Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man, Kronenbourg K1664, also presented a surprise “Monsieur Sauvé” Award based on the contestants personality and fashion sense. The winner wins a private corner at the Kronenbourg Pool Party @ The Pool where they can enjoy 64 pints of K1664 beer, up to RM1,664 worth of food, with up to 10 friends.
Esquire Malaysia is proud to present Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man and following a surge of entrants this year, looks forward to bringing the competition back for many years to come. Sponsors and partners who made the event possible include Kronenbourg K1664, Leica, Penhaligon’s, Wardrobe, Storm London, Lustro and Circus, Pavilion KL. Esquire Malaysia would like to extend their thanks to them all for their valuable support in this stylish quest.

Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Men 2012 – REVEALED

Roslan Said, Design Associate, 43, was crowned as Malaysia’s Best Dressed Real Man 2012 and receives bespoke tailoring from Wardrobe, a Leica compact camera, a Storm London watch of his choice, Penhaligon’s Perfume, Lustro vouchers and best of all, a framed picture of his Esquire shoot. “Roslan carries himself well. I liked that he was older and willing to join a competition where he knew that most of the competition would be young dudes. He still brought it to the table, out-dressed the others and also knew what he was talking about,” said Rudy La Faber, 2011 Best Dressed Real Man.

Saiful Hifzudeen, Chemical Engineer, 25, was the first runners up and received a Leica Compact Camera, a Storm London watch of his choice, Penhaligon’s Perfume and Lustro vouchers worth RM500. “Young and funky. Dared to play with colours and it works”, said Lim Fang Heng, CEO, Wardrobe.

Albert Liaw, Businessman, 34, was the second runner up and received a Storm London watch of his choice, Penhaligon’s Perfume and Lustro vouchers worth RM500. “His suit was impeccably tailored, it had just the right amount of break and the cuff was old school and elegant,” said Jason Leong, Fashion Writer, Esquire Malaysia.

Edmund Kuah, Marketing Director, 23 and Ananthan Sivaraman, PR Consultant, 32 received honorary mentions and Lustro vouchers for finishing among the best five dressed real men in Malaysia.

The Best Dressed Real Man Malaysia is based on a key fashion pillar in the UK, Britain’s Best Dressed Real Man, and has run to much fanfare in London. As such, it asks normal, non-celebrity men to send in their photos, demonstrate their fashion sense, be that with luxury brands or just interesting combinations that spell style. “A very important aspect we want to convey is that style is not about money: it’s simply the best of what every man can afford, imagination and—most importantly—attitude,” concluded Coleman, rightly proud of a contest that got Malaysia talking and caring more about men’s style.
