Many visitors are very interested in the new fan system ZAplus.

"The interest in our new, energy-saving products has become huge," Peter Fenkl, Chairman of the Board of Ziehl-Abegg, comments regarding the Chillventa industry fair in Nürnberg. During the leading international trade fair for refrigeration, indoor air and heat pumps, the energy saving potential from Ziehl-Abegg struck a special cord.

Overall, the fan and motor experts from Künzelsau gave high marks to the trade fair. The eye-catcher in the exhibition stand in Hall 7 was the new ZAplus fan system. ZAplus stands for an axial fan in a compact unit made of high-strength composite material in which the motor and controller are integrated. Along with the perfectly matched combination of efficient individual elements, the composite material also permits new shapes; and that has a positive, selective influence on the airflow. "Since our ZAplus fan system beats the EU Directive ErP 2015 with the classic AC motors, with modern EC motors we can be significantly better than required by the EU" adds Fenkl. That provides the device manufacturers certainty even beyond 2015 (ErP 2015). Therefore, "The idea has been very well accepted by the customers; especially considering that the concept, along with the energy savings, impresses with its tremendous simplification of the handling for the customers," remarks Fenkl regarding feedback from the device manufacturers (OEM's).

Customers were especially interested in the savings during on-going operation. With one axial fan from the FE2owlet series from Ziehl-Abegg in continuous use, the ZAplus saves an average of 150 euros per year, according to recent measurements. Simultaneously, the new development is quieter than comparable models and facilitates significant air reserves.

The improved medium-pressure fan, the MAXvent, was also closely scrutinized during Chillventa. "Many fair visitors were surprised by this fan and very thankful that an experienced manufacturer has resolved to tackle the problems of refrigeration engineering" Fenkl points out. The outcome is more air, lower energy consumption and less background noise.

Since the condensers and recoolers are often equipped with multiple fans, which have to be controlled efficiently quietly, Ziehl-Abegg presented innovations for that, too. Modularity makes a new generation of frequency inverters, so-called "basic" units, stand out from the crowd. The products can be flexibly deployed and can be easily expanded with desired additional features through add-on expansion modules. The inspiration for this development was the energy-saving EC fans from Ziehl-Abegg (ECblue). With their simple handling and their modular expandability they enjoy great popularity in the market. This successful concept has now also been implemented in the new "basic" frequency inverters.

Ziehl-Abegg also demonstrated how the energy consumption of internal rotor motors can be improved, which can be used with many centrifugal fans. EC motors normally reach the maximum efficiency at the nominal speed, the so-called design point. But normally, motors run in a significantly lower speed range so they are not so efficient. Through load-dependent adaptation of the controller, in the PMblue internal rotor motor series and in the EC external rotor motors, Ziehl-Abegg controls the motor controller in such a manner that efficient operation is maintained across a wider speed range. "That additionally contributes to noticeable cost and energy savings", Fenkl states.

Ziehl-Abegg (Künzelsau, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) is one of the internationally leading companies in the ventilation and drive technology sector with matching control technology. Examples of application areas are heating and refrigeration plants along with clean room and agricultural technology. Already back in the 50's, Ziehl-Abegg laid the basis for modern ventilation drives which are still the state of the art worldwide (external rotor motors). Another sector is electric motors, which provide the drive in elevators and medical applications (computer tomography), in deep-sea underwater vehicles and in modern motor buses.

The high-tech company impresses with its high degree of vertical integration. Ziehl-Abegg provides 1,700 employees with jobs in Southern-German production plants. Globally more than 3,100 employees work for the company. They are distributed globally among 8 production facilities and 7 assembly sites along with 29 sales locations. Approximately 30,000 different products are sold in more than 100 countries. The sales amount to 358 million euros. Two-thirds of the sales were achieved in the export market.

Emil Ziehl founded the company in 1910 in Berlin as a manufacturer of electric motors. After the Second World War, the company headquarters was relocated to Southern Germany. Ziehl-Abegg AG is not quoted on the stock market and is family owned. Please visit www.ziehl-abegg.com for more information.
