German Stupa Star Duda Celebrates His First Golden Moment!

Stupa is proud to announce that its German Stupa star Benedikt Duda emerges victorious at the German Nationals Championship, Bremen. The 27-year-old claimed his first men’s national title after a wonderful comeback against Bastian Stegar. First, the Olympics silver and now the gold, August has been a great month for the young lad. Alongside Dang Qiu, he claimed his fourth consecutive doubles title as well.

After a long break due to the pandemic, the 89th National German Championship began at the ÖVB-Arena Bremen. Earlier in the tournament, Benedikt Duda knocked out the 20-year-old Fulda talent Fan Bo Meng in the semi-finals with a 4-1 win to enter into the finals. This was the second time Duda had been stepping into the finals. The previous year, the 27-year-old from Bergneustadt lost the finals against Ricardo Walther in a close match. It was time the tables turned as Stupa worked its magic.

In the finals, Duda had a rough start but played hard to break through the 1-2 game lag he had against Bastian Steger. This was Duda's second attempt at the men's title and was finally able to clinch his maiden title with a little extra help from Stupa. Whereas, Bastian Steger has been a two-time men’s champion at the German Nationals and it has been his fifth final that was a tough fight. In a great battle of topspin rallies, Duda had an edge over the experienced champion and overtook Stegar with a great comeback. After a strategic time in the fourth game, Duda was able to play with much more confidence and to his strengths that forced errors onto Stegar. Thereon, Benedikt left no space for mistakes and ended the game by winning the next three games.

The deficit at the start of the match was a bit shaky/off balance. Duda said "It took me a long time until I played freely in the final until I could free myself from the pressure. Basti also played very, very well against me and I tried a lot in the first four sets but couldn't find the right tactics. Only after I took my time out in the fourth set did things go better and then I found the right rhythm for me today."

It was a double crown for Benedikt Duda as he also took away the gold medal in the doubles category for the fourth time in a row. The duo dominated Ruwen Filus and Steffen Mengel in the finals with a straight 3-0 win. They eliminated Harmut Lohse and Frederik Spreckelsen again in straight games to storm into the finals.
