Executive Coaching: 11 Tips for Corporate Leaders to Elevate Their Game to Next Level Success

Executive Coaching, Leadership

Executive Coaching, Leadership

As a corporate leader, what are you hoping to achieve in the future? The corner office with a view? More control over your department? A salary increase? Whatever it may be, you can fast-track your success and move up the corporate ladder by becoming a more well-rounded leader.

Opportunity won’t knock at your door - it’s time to take your success into your own hands and elevate your career through personal development.

By executing the following 11 executive coaching tips, you can take your career to the next level and enjoy higher success levels. These tips will help you within your current company or secure a better position in another organization.

1. Realize the Power of Empathy.

Empathy is an essential leadership skill. It allows you to develop an effective team, make good decisions, and nurture working relationships. If you are empathetic, you can understand another person’s perspective, experience, and feelings. Just as high levels of empathy will push you forward, a lack of empathy can hold you back.

If you are a naturally empathetic person and often “put yourself in their shoes,” – keep it up!
If you are a little low in this area, start making a conscious effort to check-in with yourself before responding and making decisions.

Ask yourself how your actions will affect the other person? How are they feeling at this moment? Then, ensure your actions demonstrate compassion. Empathy is much more than merely recognizing how the other person feels. You must care about the effect you have.

2. Sharpen Your Emotional Intelligence Skills.

As a corporate leader, you’re going to encounter stressful situations and be forced to make crucial decisions that will significantly impact the organization. How do you handle stress? How do you handle things when they don’t go your way? If you get visibly angry and frustrated, you need to work on your emotional intelligence skills.

Companies, executives, and employees want a leader that will remain cool, calm, and collected when things get tough. If you raise your voice or slam a door, you look out-of-control and unprofessional. By recognizing and managing your own emotions, you can make better decisions, manage relationships and effectively lead your team.

Research has found that emotionally intelligent people are better at their jobs, make more effective decisions, and are considered more likable. As a result, over 75% ( http://press.careerbuilder.com/2011-08-18-Seventy-One-Percent-of-Employers-Say-They-Value-Emotional-Intelligence-Over-IQ-According-to-CareerBuilder-Survey ) of hiring managers look for emotional intelligence skills when filling a position.

3. Be a Diversity and Inclusion Leader.

In your current position, you must foster a diverse and inclusive working environment. This is not only a good idea on an ethical level, but it will provide you with a significant business advantage. Research ( https://thenextweb.com/entrepreneur/2019/04/10/why-diverse-teams-make-better-business-decisions/ ) has found that diverse teams are 87% better at making decisions, and a diverse organization is 120% more likely to meet financial objectives.

As a corporate leader, listen to marginalized groups' perspectives, create an inclusive policy so employees feel comfortable, and implement programs and activities that will continue to develop a diverse and inclusive workplace culture.

4. Develop an Unbeatable Mindset.

With greater success comes greater responsibility and determination. Consider all the major execs and CEOs of the world – do you think they gave up when times were tough? Of course not! That’s because they have an unbeatable mindset. Also known as mental toughness, an unbeatable mindset is rooted in awareness and mindfulness. It’s about understanding where you currently are, accepting it, and making a choice.

Mark Divine, former Navy SEAL and author of Unbeatable Mind: Forge Resiliency and Mental Toughness to Succeed at an Elite Level, and founder of several million-dollar businesses, recommends positive self-talk.

When something negative comes up, override negative thoughts and redirect them to something positive. He also recommends visualizing the desired outcome and continuously focusing on your goals. Bottom line – don’t give up.

5. Practice Adaptable Leadership.

As the past year highlighted, change is inevitable. Leaders everywhere have been forced to make difficult decisions for their business to survive. Those who have thrived were adaptable.

You must be able to adapt to changes quickly. You need to view changes as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. When you approach something, make sure you are looking at it from all angles and consider others' views. Asking questions, being inquisitive, and thinking “outside the box” will increase your adaptability. Adaptable leaders plan for the unexpected. This means developing contingency plans, evaluating objectives annually, and completing risk assessments.

6. Make Mental Health and Well Being a Priority.

Unfortunately, mental health and well-being isn’t always an executive priority, and it can have adverse effects on leaders and an organization. Mental health struggles are at an all-time high and can result in burnout caused by chronic workplace stress.

Although you may think that working 80 hours a week, skipping sleep, and meals to work will be better for your career, it can hurt you in the long run. This will affect your health, mental clarity, focus, and productivity. As a leader, you should make mental health and well-being a priority for you and your employees. Set designated times every day to unplug and do something that brings you joy, like spending time with family. To be more effective at your job, you need to step away and prioritize your health by exercising daily, eating nutritious meals, and getting enough sleep.

7. Design and Effectively Communicate a Strong Organizational Work Culture.

Organizational culture starts at the top and has a direct impact on the success of your company. Too often, leaders assign culture to HR, which can leave it poorly managed and inconsistent.

Culture trumps strategy. According to Harvard Business Review ( https://hbr.org/2018/01/the-leaders-guide-to-corporate-culture ) , when your organizational work culture is aligned with strategy and leadership, it will drive positive organizational outcomes.
Design and effectively communicate what your workplace culture is all about. Start with core values and make sure that policies, practices, and communication are aligned with these values. Lastly, remain consistent with all of your actions and communication.

8. Implement Successful Peak Performance Strategies.

Reach your potential and maximize your efforts by implementing successful peak performance strategies. These “work hacks” will result in higher effectiveness and productivity and get you to the next level of success sooner.

There is an abundance of strategies that will help. For example, work in 90-minute time blocks and designate one specific task to focus on. Don’t check emails, answer calls, or become distracted. Following this, build in mental breaks for recovery. Although it may feel challenging at first, you will soon find productivity increases. Block your calendar accordingly, and you’ll find yourself accomplishing much more in a day.

9. Drive Growth and Innovation.

Innovation is a significant driver of growth. A McKinsey report on Leadership and Innovation stated that over 70% of senior executives say that innovation is one of their top three drivers of growth for their company.

You can be the driving force behind this by moving beyond traditional offerings and procedures.
As a leader, you can build an organization where innovation plays a prominent role and is rewarded. Those who are more innovative are also viewed as being better leaders. Don’t be afraid of trying something new – take calculated risks and look for opportunities for innovation. As a result, both your organization and career will grow.

10. Master Best Practices Leading a Team.

A team is only as good as its leader – how are you leading your team? By becoming a more effective leader, you can reach the next level of corporate success. Spend time mastering best practices for leading a team.

For example, lay the foundation for a high level of cooperation, communication, and innovation by setting clear objectives. Ensure everyone on the team has clear, concise, and measurable goals, both individually and as a team. As a leader, map out the path to achieve these goals and support them along the way. A great way to do this is through effective team meetings that serve a purpose and build morale.

11. Laser Focus Business Strategies and Execution.

The previous ten tips will be useless if you don’t implement them consistently, and the same applies to all business strategies. You must have laser focus and execute regularly. There’s an old corporate saying that says, “companies become what they focus on.” This applies to leaders too.

Business strategy will determine how the company will reach its goals. If you and everyone else becomes side-tracked, working on different projects that aren’t aligned will result in wasted time, money, and resources, and you won’t reach your goals. You, and your team, must have laser focus and execute the business strategies put in place.

When you are up for a promotion or speaking with a recruiter about a promising new opportunity, they look at much more than the experience and education on your resume. They want great leaders with the skills, strategies, and mindset to help an organization reach its corporate goals.

By reading this article, it’s clear you have a high level of determination and want to reach your potential as a corporate leader. Use that determination to implement these executive coaching tips, and you’ll soon find yourself achieving the next level of success.
