Yet another Gas Price Shock on the Horizon
Against a backdrop of price hikes over the last two years of 40%, to add to the 25% gas price increase shock announced by the UK energy industry in December 2006, a new gas price shock is on the horizon due to the dispute between Russia and the Ukraine over gas supplies. The dispute centres over price as there is no actual shortage of gas; Russia wants the Ukraine to pay the going international market rate for natural gas. This means a whopping price increase of 360%. The Ukraine wants to keep its privileged price deal under the old Soviet regime. The row has now escalated to the point where Russia has now cut off gas supplies to the Ukraine in this "pay the going rate or else dispute".
25% of Western Europe's gas needs are supplied by Russian gas fields. The problem is that a major supply pipeline runs from Russian gas fields through the Ukraine to supply Western Europe with the UK at the end of this gas pipeline distribution network. The Ukrainians have stated that they will take 15% of the gas flowing through the pipeline regardless as payment for gas transportation costs to Western Europe. The Russians in return are now threatening to withdraw all gas supplies through the pipeline to stop the Ukrainians receiving any gas at all. No gas for the Ukraine means no Russian gas will reach the UK.
Whichever way the dispute goes, and it looks set to create a major shortage of gas in the coming months leading to further price increases, the answer for consumers is to use less gas by needing less. Needing less gas for domestic consumers is simply a factor of having a more energy efficient home; comfort is maintained but less gas energy is needed in doing so.
To make a home energy efficient requires a high standard of insulation. Only polyurethane insulation spray foam can meet this increasing need. Fibre glass or mineral wool insulation is now not an option due to the excessive thickness required and the fact that it requires top ventilation to avoid condensation.
Rooftherm at http://www.rooftherm.co.uk offers consumers free advice and consultation on making the best use of spray foam polyurethane insulation within the home and how this can lead to dramatic improvements in creating an energy efficient home where 50% or more savings in fuel bills can be achieved. Polyurethane spray foam insulation offers the consumer an easy and cost efficient way to create a thermally efficient home in typically just a day. Insulation indeed against future energy price hikes.
