Press release from: Connecticut Cobras

A Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and former pro guard, Troy Bradford, has been named Head Coach of the Connecticut Cobras

A Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and former pro guard, Troy Bradford, has been named Head Coach of the Connecticut Cobras

The Connecticut Cobras are excited to announce Troy Bradford as Head Coach for the new expansion basketball team set to compete in the 2022 season of The Basketball League.

“The organization is proud to announce Troy Bradford as our inaugural Head Coach of the Connecticut Cobras,” said Team Market Owner, Anthony Hill.

“Troy’s experience both on and off the court professionally fits the Cobras and The Basketball League model that we’ll embody. We are excited to have such an accomplished Connecticut basketball legend leading us into our first season in the TBL.”

A native of Hamden, Connecticut, Coach Bradford brings a wealth of basketball experience to the role as a former accomplished player at Fairfield University, including being inducted into the Fairfield University Athletic Hall of Fame and the MAAC Hall of Fame at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts.

“I am honored that the Connecticut Cobras thought enough of me to give me the chance to lead a group of young aspiring men. This opportunity is everything to me,” said Coach Bradford.

“I’m a big advocate for young people in helping them reach their potential and goals. The community and sponsors can expect our young men to conduct themselves with class and dignity on and off the court. They will also be active in the communities around Connecticut, which is important.”

Coach Bradford attended both Hamden Hall Country Day School and Wilbur Cross High School, where the athletic guard led the Governors to the 1985 CT LL Boys Basketball State Championship and earned him a McDonald's All American nomination and Connecticut Player of The Year (1985). At Fairfield University (‘85-’89), Troy completed an impressive career and ranks among the Top Ten on the Stags all-time scoring list, standing seventh with 1,648 points. In 1989, Troy also competed in the 1st Annual Slam Dunk Competition at the Final Four in Seattle, Washington. Troy began his professional playing career when the Connecticut Skyhawks of the United States Basketball League (USBL) drafted him as their first overall pick in 1990. Over the next 10 years, Troy’s pro career took him from Connecticut, to the Spanish League with Cartegena (‘91-’92), the USBL with the Sunblasters (‘92), Brunico, Italy (‘92), the NBA Summer League Free Agent Division (‘93-’94), and the EBA Professional Basketball League as a player-coach, capturing the 1999 Championship with the Lehigh Colonials.

"My message to aspiring professional athletes is to 'Never Give Up'. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do or put a limit on what they think you can do, because you know the work that you have put in. Be limitless. If you know you can play in this league or any pro league, you have to go get what you want," Bradford explained.

Coach Bradford started his coaching career with the CT Flame Boys (17U), Greenwich Connecticut Flame, King Low Heywood High School, and the Darien Girls Basketball Travel Team, before launching his own AAU organization -- United Sons and Daughters -- in 2007. Built upon the foundation of growing self-esteem in youth through sports, Coach Bradford and the United Sons and Daughters (USAD) 17U teams have won fourteen Tournament Championships throughout Connecticut and the Northeast. With Troy at the helm, USAD captured 30 Tournament championships and has assisted 24 student-athletes in reaching NCAA Division I basketball programs since 2013.

The Connecticut Cobras will hold a press conference on Monday, August 16, at 7:00 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford to introduce Troy Bradford to the media and public, as the Cobras prepare for the 2022 TBL season next March.
