Gleistein Ropes provides added clarity for the selection of high performance ropes made with Dyneema® at SMM 2012 in Hamburg
The XCover System delivers a new perspectiveBremen, 22 August 2012
Gleistein now provides its customers with a significantly easier way to choose high performance ropes with cores made of Dyneema® – by looking at things in a different way. The new XCover System approaches rope selection by considering the factor typically most important when choosing ropes: the break load. Ropes are traditionally described via their outer diameter resulting from the total cross-section of both core and cover. However, the strength of ropes made with Dyneema® is determined exclusively by the load-bearing core. In contrast, the cover serves to ensure the rope is primed for the various potential areas of specific application. This means that overall diameter and weight varies, but the strength remains constant. That is why Gleistein is now turning the tables on the usual convention and breaks down its range of high modulus double and multiple braids according to their respective break loads. This ensures more clarity and easier comparisons. The XCover System will be unveiled along with further tailor-made rope solutions in the area of commercial marine at the SMM (Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology) trade fair in Hamburg taking place 4-7 September. Gleistein can be found in Hall A1, Stand 432.
Ropes made of high performance Dyneema® fibres boast the strength and stretch attributes of wire ropes yet weigh just a fraction and provide the handling characteristics of textile rope. That’s why in an ever increasing number of fields, wire ropes are being replaced with their Dyneema®-based counterparts. And this also has pure, hard economic reasons – especially when a robust protective cover effectively shields the load-bearing fibres from the rigours of daily deployment. But which cover is the right one? And how does a cover affect the diameter and weight of a rope? While the requirements placed on a high performance rope can usually be easily compared and described with just a few simple parameters, the criteria for a cover are often individual as they largely depend on how they will be deployed.
With its new XCover System, Gleistein has broken down its range of ropes with Dyneema® cores into two types: untreated for maximum flexibility und long life; and heat set for greater material density and optimised strength and stretch attributes. All double braids of the MegaTwin Dyneema® series can now be seen on an easily intelligible overview, and ropes from the MegaTwin Dyneema® HS series in another. The MegaTwin construction type is replaced from a certain thickness by the multi-braid MegaMooring series, which features seven braided cores that are bundled together by the cover.
Five covers types can be chosen from, which affect attributes such as dimensional stability, performance on winches, abrasion resistance, buoyancy, weight and the diameter of the rope. The range spans from the very affordable Plus cover made of a Polyolefin-Polyester mix, to the elaborately constructed SnakeSkinCover (SSC) made of Dyneema®. The SSC is comprised of a multitude of wafer-thin single braids that are wrapped around the core. They provide extreme dimensional stability and durability to the rope with a low outer diameter and weight.
The XCover System celebrates its debut at this year’s SMM in Hamburg. All visitors to the fair can pick up a copy of the brand new catalogue showing the 20 available combinations of the MegaTwin Dyneema® and MegaMooring Dyneema® series on four easy-to-read comparison charts. Among the other highlights to be seen at the trade fair is Gleistein’s perennial star, DynaOne® – a pure Dyneema® line with performance characteristics exceeding those of wire ropes. Also attracting attention will be the robust WinchMaster featuring tremendous dimensional stability and long life. This mooring line has been specially conceived for tough deployment and thanks to being buoyant and available for a knockout price, it really stands out from the competition.
The SMM opens its gates from 4-7 September in Hamburg. The brand new Gleistein booth is located in Hall A1, Stand 432.
