First virtual Diana Memorial on the Internet

The first DIANA pixel memorial is going on-line on July 1st 2007 to coincide with the 46th birthday of the ‘Queen of Hearts’. A Diana pixel image will be unveiled, pixel by pixel, on the website www.for-diana.com in connection with a fundraising campaign. The artist Frank Reich is calling for the public to unveil Diana’s pixel portrait by buying individual pixels and thereby erecting the complete Diana pixel memorial. Once the whole image is unveiled and completed there will be a five-figure donation made to charitable causes that were once so close to Diana’s heart.
Thus this virtual memorial network connects thousands of Internet users to commemorate the ‘Queen of Hearts’ on the anniversary of her death on August 31st 2007. Simultaneously the same Diana pixel image will be reconstructed from 6.000 individual roses to be presented to the public at the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen in Germany. We are delighted to announce His Highness Eduard Prince of Anhalt as our official patron and supporter of this Diana pixel memorial. Since His Highness Eduard Prince of Anhalt values highly Lady Diana’s tireless work for charity, he is hoping to gain support for the Diana pixel memorial, so that a significant donation can be made to the a charitable project. The first pixel memorial buyer is Karl-Heinz Reck, former Minister of Culture in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The artist and photographer Frank Reich initiated this pixel project to reflect Diana’s personality artistically. The modern fairytale is a media game at the same time as it is subject of the art project around the ‘Queen of Cameras’. The image of one of the most photographed personalities of all times has been altered and broken into its smallest informational units that still allow the image to be recognised as such. Diana’s presence in the media has burned her image into the collective visual memory to such an extend that only the smallest snippets of information are necessary to revive Diana’s personality in all her facets. This phenomenon is utilised to appreciate Diana’s human qualities. The memorial will thus help to further her work and ideals – it will not just exist for its own sake, but rather extend a practical helping hand to those in need. Other projects by Frank Reich, which are exploring this phenomenon, include a portrait of Pope John Paul II, a pixel image of Mao Tse Tung and a large image made from slices of toast. Like the portrait of George W. Bush, all of Frank Reich’s pixel projects are using pixel materials that have a direct association with the depicted personality.
