Microvec to add new uncertainty estimation to its PIV software

06-23-2021 03:56 PM CET | Science & Education

Press release from: Vision Asia Technology Pte Ltd

Microvec, one of the leaders in the field of fluid mechanics, is adding a new uncertainty estimation method to its software. This new update is based on research by Prof. Pavlos Vlachos and his colleagues from Purdue University. It uses the correlation plane as a model for the probability density function of displacement and calculates the second order moment of the correlation (Sayantan Bhattacharya et al 2018 Meas. Sci. Technol. 29 115301.)

Prof. Vlachos has published many scientific papers on uncertainty estimation over the years and has worked on improving the accuracy.

”The extensive validation of [a] new method based on synthetic as well as experimental images, shows better sensitivity to spatial variation in error compared to other methods. In addition, the standard uncertainty coverage predicted is higher.” said Prof. Vlachos. “We are happy to see the implementation of our work to be made available to researchers worldwide.”

“Microvec has always strived to keep its PIV software on a world class level,” said Dr. Runjie Wei, CTO of Microvec, “We are excited to be able to implement this first-rate method from Purdue University, one of the most well knows research centers of Particle Image Velocimetry.”

About Microvec Pte. Ltd.

Microvec Pte. Ltd. has offered complete various Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) systems since 2002. The company has been developing proprietary PIV Technology and has been constantly improving and implementing new techniques and algorithms based on the latest research in the field. Microvec has teamed up with some of the leading researchers worldwide to add their input to Microvec products and to gain access to the most advanced and innovative research. Microvec introduced the world’s first commercial PIV software capable of instantaneous pressure reconstruction, one of the most advanced algorithms in Tomographic PIV - Intensity Enhanced MART. Recently, Microvec has also developed AI PIV software, offering high spatial resolution beyond the limits of interrogation windows and capable of obtaining dense velocity field with down to one vector per pixel.

Dr. Pavlos Vlachos is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Director of Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering at the School of Mechanical Engineering with Purdue University. Pavlos served as a President’s Fellow in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships (EVPRP), where he worked to develop interdisciplinary research opportunities in health and life sciences. He is internationally recognized for his leading research in fluid mechanics, biofluids and biomechanics. His work has been funded by diverse agencies from NIH, NSF, DOD and other organizations in relevant industries. He has received numerous awards recognizing his excellence in teaching and research, is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and serves as the associate editor for the International Journal of Multi-Phase Flows.
