Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) is a simulation system which is used in development and test of complex real-time embedded systems. Also, these systems provide simulation of the physical part of a machine or system. The machine or physical part of the system is connected with the control system, through actuators and sensors, where the simulation replicates the exact copy of actual hardware interconnection. Further, if the simulator is designed well, it accurately mimics the tasks and are widely used to test control system. Whereas, HIL testing is a process of signaling a controller that is connected to a test system to simulate reality and tricks the controller into thinking it is in the assembled product. With the help of HIL testing and design, development iteration can easily run through thousands of possible scenarios to properly exercise controller operations, as these simulations visualize the real-world system. These systems are widely used in automotive and aerospace applications which is propelling the growth of hardware-in-the-loop market. For example, airplanes, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles have sophisticated autopilots. A HIL device mimics autopilot embedded system into thinking that it is operating with real-world inputs and outputs, in real-time. In simple terms, the autopilot system is fooled into thinking that the aircraft is flying.
