Gleistein Ropes records 100% rope reliability in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race
Third place overall for the Gleistein-sponsored PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG team in the ultimate offshore endurance race for yachtsBremen, 25 July 2012
After more than 39,000 nautical miles of racing, the PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG team has taken overall third place in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. The result comes more than eight months after casting off in Alicante, Spain in October 2011 and crossing the finish line in Galway, Ireland this July. Not a single rope breakage was recorded on PUMA’s Mar Mostro throughout the entire race, a feat attributable to both the skill of the crew and Official Rope Supplier to the team, Gleistein Ropes.
Regarded as the world’s most challenging endurance race for yachts, the Volvo Ocean Race recently concluded its 2011-2012 instalment. The PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG team finished third overall ahead of Groupama sailing team and CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, in the most closely fought contest in the history of the race – with just 27 points separating the first three yachts.
As Official Rope Supplier to the PUMA team, Gleistein Ropes was on board from start to finish. Reliably mastering some of the harshest conditions imaginable, not a single rope breakage was recorded over the entire race. Mar Mostro Skipper, Ken Read: “Across 39,270 nautical miles, through treacherous seas and in racing around the buoys, Gleistein ropes performed perfectly every time. We knew going into this Volvo Ocean Race that we could count on Gleistein ropes to get us around the world, and their durable, high-quality products helped PUMA Ocean Racing onto the podium at every stopover and overall.”
Gleistein continuously invests in the development of innovative rope solutions to ensure highest performance for all types of applications, and participation in events such as the Volvo Ocean Race are a part of this strategy. Anke Neuner, Product Development and Quality Control Manager at Gleistein Ropes explains “While a lot is possible in terms of testing and R&D on the shop floor as well as in our in-house state-of-the-art rope testing laboratory, little can match the lessons that we can learn when our products are put to a long-term test under real-life conditions. The race has confirmed the extreme strength, high performance and extreme reliability our ropes offer, while also providing us with further insights on how we can continue to optimise our products in the future.”
Among the ropes used aboard Mar Mostro throughout the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 were:
• MegaTwin Dyneema® HS TEC/PES 50 10mm Ø in natural/purple
• TaperTwin 12mm Ø in natural/blue
• MegaTwin DynaOne® HS6 TEC/PES50 9mm Ø in natural/black
• MegaTwin DynaOne® HS10 SK90 PBO100 13mm Ø in natural colour
• MegaTwin DynaOne® HS8 TEC/PBO50 12mm Ø in natural colour
