AIEA Board of Directors Contributes to UNESCO Futures of Education InitiativeNew York, NY: (April 12, 2021)— In January of 2021, members of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Board of Directors took part in two focus groups convened by the UNESCO Futures of Education initiative. In UNESCO’s words, this initiative seeks to spark “a global debate on how knowledge, education and learning need to be reimagined in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and precarity.” As part of its consultation process with thought leaders and groups from around the world, an independent International Commission convened by the UNESCO Director-General invited AIEA leaders and members of UNESCO to provide their perspective on the future of education. Topics addressed in focus group discussions included trends impacting the future of international higher education, the purpose of higher education in 2050, the charge for educators and administrators, and the key role of intercultural competence.
A resulting report, “Global Learning and Intercultural Competence as Imperatives for the Future of Higher Education: Reducing inequities and creating effective global problem-solvers,” summarizes key points from these discussions and will be among the inputs considered in the global Futures of Education report and other products developed by the initiative.
