Fiber Data Internet Exchange (FD-IX) – Indianapolis has reached a new traffic milestone

Fiber Data Internet Exchange (FD-IX) – Indianapolis has reached a new traffic milestone. Thursday evening at around 10:00 PM. FD-IX Indy reached 51 gigabits per second, the first time that infrastructure has passed 50 gigabits per second.

Traffic has been growing due to the pandemic, but the largest bursts of traffic on our infrastructure come from major updates. These updates come from a variety of sources, mostly dominated by video games and operating systems.

FD-IX has been undergoing backend and infrastructure upgrades over the past six months and is looking forward to completing these projects over the next year to handle the growth our connected networks anticipate.

CIO Mike Hammett says, “We’ve had some great conversations with our CDN and ISP networks regarding anticipated traffic levels. While last night marked a milestone for us, we expect steady but significant growth in the foreseeable future. We’re not aware of any significant updates happening at that time, so the next big update will give us a healthy spike that we’ll be happy to carry. Due to this growth, we have had to upgrade our core capacity, which was a challenging project with our presence in multiple data centers in a given market. Our next infrastructure project will be upgrading switches to roll out 100G ports in more locations to meet demand.”
