Marple Antiques Offers Centuries Old Japanese Netsuke Online

Netsuke are small, miniature sculptures that were hand carved into material like ivory, wood, and boar tusk. In the 17th century, netsuke were used by men to fasten items, like money pouches and tobacco boxes, to kimonos (which had no pockets). They became a type of fashion statement, and were hand carved into intricate patterns and designs. Most are no bigger than a few cm, and still in exquisite quality for their age. They are all highly collectable.

Ester is especially excited about the tagua nut netsukes. Known as “vegetable ivory,” these netsukes are carved from the seeds of a palm tree, making them free of animal cruelty with a similar look and texture.
“Historically, many of these items were made with ivory, and we understand that that can make some people uncomfortable today,” said Ester. “Tagua nut netsukes are rare, and give collectors a chance to own a truly one-of-a-kind item that is also free of controversy and still hundreds of years old.”
