The African Hidden Champions (AHC) Initiative Launches First

An innovative platform for celebrating sub-Saharan African businesses, The African Hidden Champions (AHC) Initiative, highlights the uniqueness of Dawa Group and UBI Energy, the program’s first cohort.

The African Hidden Champions (AHC) initiative, which was launched in September 2020 is staying true to its goal of promoting sub-Saharan African businesses by providing a platform to document their growth stories. In a related development, the AHC initiative recently announced the launch of the first cohort, Dawa Group and UBI Energy, two forward-thinking businesses set to disrupt their respective industries.

The African business environment has continued to evolve in recent times, with new businesses delivering innovative solutions to meet the diverse needs of the market. However, studies covering success stories of such African companies are few and far between; an area where The African Hidden Champions initiative is looking to make a difference by generating and publishing case studies about such businesses.

The African Hidden Champions (AHC) initiative was created by Africa Foresight Group (AFG) and DEG with a commitment to grow and advance the prospects of people and businesses on the African continent. The launch of the first cohort of hidden champions also resonates with the goal of celebrating the achievements of African businesses through an award and investment promotion scheme for selected companies.

Dawa Group has been described as an emerging giant transitioning from a trading business to becoming a leading name in the pharmaceutical industry. The group has a presence in 11 countries, recording revenue of over $60 million in 2020 from more than 1,000 product lines. Led by Dr. Mohindra and Dr. Patel, Dawa Group looks poised to become a reference for pharmaceuticals in Africa.

Founded by Salma Okonkwo in 2007, UBI Energy aims to provide sustainable solutions to meet the power challenges in Ghana and West Africa. The company has witnessed steady growth over the years, attracting the attention of the likes of Trafigura, which acquired a 49% stake in the group of companies for approximately $150 million in 2013.
