Phosphorescent pigments are a specific type of photoluminescence associated with fluorescent pigments. Unlike fluorescence, phosphorescent materials do not immediately re-emit the radiation they absorb.

In general, short-lasting phosphorescent pigments use zinc sulfide as the base and copper as the activator. For long-lasting phosphorescent pigments, alkaline earth aluminates or alkaline earth silicates become the base, and rare earth ions become the activator.
