Celebrating 10 years of Innovation with the Talanome Carnatic Metronome!

Mountain View, CA, February 22nd, 2021 – On this very day ten years ago, Upbeat Labs released Talanome, the first Carnatic Metronome App on the Apple App Store. Since then, Upbeat Labs has continued to update and improve the App with a multitude of features to keep up with the demands of a rigorous music/dance practice. Highlights include:

Talanome was born when Sridhar Rajagopal, the Founder of Upbeat Labs, started Mridangam lessons about 10 years ago. He looked for Carnatic Tala Apps on the then nascent Apple App Store to help with his practice, and finding none, decided to make one utilizing his skills as a Software Engineer. Talanome was built from the ground up, focusing on Carnatic music theory and structure. A very precise Sound Engine forms the solid foundation necessary to keep up with the demands of strict time synchronization requirements for a professional metronomic device.

Talanome is more than a metronomic aid – it is a percussion-driven exploratory and educational tool! For each tala, one can learn about its structure and composition with the Angas used, the number of Aksharas and Māthras, its traditional name, and so on.

With its latest release, version 9.1, the Talanome Sound Engine has been further enhanced and updated to support dynamic pitch changes. It has also been optimized to keep it small, efficient and highly performant, thus enabling it to be run smoothly on older devices (such as iPhone 4S). It is acknowledged that Apple iOS provides the best platform for serious music apps. By taking pains to ensure Talanome runs efficiently on older devices, Upbeat Labs’ goal is to make it as egalitarian as possible for a wider audience!

In addition to Talanome, Upbeat Labs has also developed a complementary Carnatic Percussion sequencing app called My TalaVadyam. It allows the user to create “sollu/konnakkol” patterns while also playing them back using natural sampled sounds of the Mridangam at any tempo. This is useful for students and teachers of Carnatic percussion to transcribe their lesson plans and for them to be able to practice the sequences at home with proper Kālapramānam and technique.
