Does Popcorn Have More Antioxidants Than Fruits and Vegetables?

A recent University of Scranton study concluded that popcorn has more antioxidants than fruits or vegetables. According to an article on the study, the idea that popcorn is “actually good for health popped up a few notches as scientists reported that it contains more of the healthful antioxidant substances called ‘polyphenols’ than fruits and vegetables.”

“The moisture content of popcorn is only 4%, which makes it a very concentrated source of carbohydrate compared to the average fruit or vegetable,” say the Griesels. “But the consumption of concentrated carbohydrates has an adverse effect on blood sugar levels. People who eat a steady stream of concentrated carbohydrates throughout the day often have constantly high blood sugar levels. Most excess blood sugar ends up being stored as body fat and consistently high levels are responsible for eventually causing insulin resistance and diabetes. If you wash your popcorn down with a sugary drink or soda, you are just compounding the problem.”

“Even though air-popped popcorn may be the only true edible whole grain, it cannot be considered the best snack food or even a good one,” the Griesels’ conclude. “There are quite a few good reasons it should be eliminated or severely restricted and replaced with fruits and vegetables.”
