Press release from: DhackMarket

Mumbai, January 29, 2021: LabelBlind®, India’s first food rating system today announced the launch of the India Protein Diversity Report, a report that highlights protein content in fresh food items from the four megacities of the country (namely, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata) and recognizes top protein rich fresh foods in the country, to help citizens fill the sufficiency gap for the macro nutrient.

This first-of-its kind report is designed to guide consumers in making informed food choices based on the protein values of commonly consumed fresh food items. Menus and ingredients of popular food & beverage products across meals, breakfast, snacks, beverages, continental food and food ordered online in the 4 cities have been given ratings based on their protein content and contribution to the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) of protein as established by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

This easy-to-follow report can be downloaded by consumers as a handy guide to identify high protein fresh food items.

Key highlights:

A sequel to the LabelBlind® India Protein Score released in 2020, LabelBlind® India Protein Diversity Report is designed with an objective to encourage a discussion on Protein, to support generating awareness for the nutrient, its sources and content in food items. Food items covered in the study are a representation of the food culture in the respective cities.

627 fresh food items representing four diverse regions of the country, commonly consumed in households, restaurants and street-side, continental cuisine and Online Ordering.

Higher protein ratings for menus in Kolkata are contributed by fish, meat, chicken, eggs and dairy products. Followed by Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru menus.

Protein content per 100 g highest in Kolkata (8.57g per 100g) followed by Mumbai (7.99g per 100g.) Average protein content per food item in Bengaluru is 7.00g per 100g - the lowest observed amongst the 4 cities, since the cuisine is largely driven by cereals and grains.

Continental food items are consumed widely across cities in the form of breakfast and snacks, and are influencing protein intake. Chicken, dairy and egg are the largest contributors of protein in continental food items, and the average protein content per food item was found to be 8.86 g/100 g

“Discussions on Quality of Calories have gained keen attention in recent times. Indian diets rely predominantly on carbohydrates to meet the caloric requirements of a large population. While the country has kept pace with caloric requirement, an overreliance on foods that are rich in carbohydrates has contributed to the growth of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and heart ailments.” says Rashida Vapiwala, founder, LabelBlind®. “The LabelBlind® India Protein Diversity Report is an appreciation of the cultural diversity of foods across four megacities of the country, through popular food items, their ingredients and nutrition values. It is an attempt to strengthen the knowledge of protein sources and their fulfilment, so consumers can optimize every meal for a better quality nutrient content,” she added.

To develop the India Protein Diversity Report, LabelBlind® studied the nutrition data of over 1000 fresh food items using its proprietary assessment tool, making it one of the most comprehensive studies on this subject. Widely accepted continental and popular online (ordered) food items were studied to lend a comprehensive approach to current and emerging food habits. Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian fresh food items were classified for the cities. Standardised recipes for each menu item were curated from reputed websites and online sources for the purpose of nutrition assessment. All recipes were analysed for macro and micro nutrient content basis the Indian Food Composition Tables (2017).

As per the ICMR, an average adult requires about 0.8 – 1.0 gram per kg of body weight of protein. The norm in urban areas is 50g of protein per day while in rural areas the norm is 48g of protein per day. This also evidenced in past studies that acknowledge the existence of declining protein intake (Source: NSSO) and protein deficiency in India (Source: IMRB). Therefore, LabelBlind®’s initiative to release the India Protein Diversity Report is a step forward to developing sustainable solutions to educate the consumers on the importance of protein, champion its sufficiency and trigger a long-term behavior change among citizens.
