The huge array of apps on smartphones can be baffling to seniors. The Easiphone Smart 1 changes all that.

The huge array of apps on smartphones can be baffling to seniors. The Easiphone Smart 1 changes all that.

Lockdown has been depressing and isolating for all of us, but particularly for the elderly in the community. It can be frightening and frustrating being on your own, coronavirus restrictions keeping your nearest and dearest away.

After a situation developed with his own elderly parent Michael Kerstein, boss of Easiphone in Bath, UK, took the initiative to come up with a smartphone that was easy to operate by the mature user through a set of essential icons at the fingertips. No clutter, just apps that mattered for the older and vulnerable person, helping them to retain their independence.

As families worry more about the wellbeing of aged parents, relatives and friends in these COVID-19 ridden times, good communication is a must. Whether an ageing parent lives nearby or long-distance, it is important to be in contact easily, even when it isn’t possible to visit in person regularly. While modern technology can make life a doddle for the young, the huge array of apps on smartphones can be baffling to seniors. The Easiphone Smart 1, just launched, changes all that.

Links to Age UK and NHS

Easiphone is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of user-friendly devices for seniors, having sold thousands of phones to concerned families in their three-year history, with links to AgeUK and the NHS by offering 24/7 support.

Let alone these awful times we live in, staying connected can help the elderly stay safe and allow them to remain in their own home for longer, so it is vital that they are able to use phones and mobiles without undue stress or difficulty.

Mike, who’s not too far off being a pensioner himself, says that at Easiphone they really understood the needs of elderly people and were always working to find new ways to use telephone technology to help people stay in touch with elderly members in the family. He enthuses: “We’re passionate about developing products, from mobiles to big-button landlines, that are not only easy to use, but help keep users safe. We strip phones back to their essential functions, so they are user-friendly and not overwhelming."

Personal concern

So how did the Smart 1 come about?
Mike explains: “I do enjoy technology and how it can change peoples’ lives for the better. A few years ago my father went into a care home and he couldn’t really see his phone very well. So, I did my research and found one of these big button phones for him. I felt there was something better that could be done, so three years ago I re-engineered a standard smartphone into one that was easy to use but had all the relevant apps built in, particularly for emergency purposes. It culminated in the all-networks Easiphone Smart 1 android.”

Why is it so special?
Well, apart from the price at just £99, there’s a lot to its function:

• It has a large 5 inch screen, loud number announcement, SOS call button, GPS location, neoprene splash-proof case, 12-month UK back-up support and easy set-up guide.
• The Easiphone Smart 1 has a sleek and stylish appearance - nothing cheap looking about it. All the icons and text can be seen easily but it also has a handy magnifier app to help viewing text for those with poor sight.
• A built-in GPS functionality let’s family and friends know exactly where the user is at all times. It works together with the SOS button and the facility can store up to six emergency contacts for when they’re needed most.
• The Smart 1 also comes with a built in camera, turned on by a single touch. Pictures taken are automatically saved and stored on an easy to install memory card, increasing the phone’s storage capacity.
• There’s no having to download apps. The Smart 1 comes with the essentials installed and can be used straight out of the box, ready for use. It has a strong Neoprene splash proof case which can withstand any drops or knocks, so the Easiphone Smart 1 can be taken just about everywhere without the worry of it being damaged.
• The device is truly built with the older user mind. Its built in magnifier makes reading text easier. There’s also a pre-installed health where one can add reminders on personal medication regime, so the user won’t ever forget when to take their pills.
• Easiphone has tried to think of everything and they have even added a number announcement feature when someone calls, so too a volume boost setting.

24/7 care line

What’s more, Easiphone’s 24/7 customer care line is available to offer help and advice, so users are never alone nor forgotten. Users are guided through the phone set up with some easy to follow video instructions and can be pre-programmed with the customer’s important contact numbers, so it’s ready to use the moment it arrives.

Easiphone also offers personally customised service packages for peace of mind - like a 24/7 Emergency Dialling service connecting the user with experienced Emergency Responders should anything happen. They will call the preferred list of contact numbers until they get hold of someone and if the situation is grave, they’ll contact the emergency services.

The west country based company provides SIM-free mobiles, easy-to-use smartphones, as well as emergency service plans from £9.99 per month with no lengthy contracts.
