More Ryanair Flights for Palma de Mallorca

Press release from: Purple Cake Factory SL

/ PR Agency: Purple Cake Factory SL
This month Ryanair commenced six new routes out of Palma de Mallorca Airport. Beginning the first week of May, the airline now flies daily to Cologne, thrice-weekly to Rome Ciampino, Porto in Portugal and Malmo Sweden, twice-weekly to Groningen in the Netherlands and once a week to Smaland in Sweden. Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty believes the new services make perfect sense for the Island.

Managing Director of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty, Stephen Dight, explains, “Mallorca has the highest foreign resident population in Spain at 21.6%, or more than one in five, and is extremely fashionable amongst a broad spectrum of nationalities from the British to the Scandinavians, Germans to Italians – this nationality mix goes a long way to explaining the resilience of our property market in comparison to say the Costa del Sol. I am certain that these new Ryanair flights will be very popular amongst Mallorca’s foreign residents, second home owners and tourists – even if the airline itself is not always everyone’s favourite.”

Indeed, according to a survey by trusted travel site Tripadvisor, Ryanair has been voted the least favourite airline for 2012 – an accolade they have held for three consecutive years. Virgin Atlantic meanwhile claimed most popular airline in the same survey. Ryanair also appeared in Spanish consumer action group FACUA’s worst company of the year top five. On this occasion telecommunications giant Movistar took the prize – also winning for three consecutive years.

Ryanair’s new routes come amidst the news that Palma de Mallorca is a rare profitable operation for AENA – the body that owns and operates the majority of Spanish airports as well as plenty more in Latin America, the United States and the UK. Of the 47 airports and two heliports managed by AENA in Spain, only ten showed profits with Palma de Mallorca being amongst them. The airport made 44.68 million euros and attracted over 22.72 million passengers in 2011, third busiest after Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat who managed to lose 94.98 million and 21.87 million euros respectively.
