A study conducted at the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan has found a link between clean teeth and a healthy heart. Researchers followed more than 100,000 people for an average of seven years and presented their findings at a recent American Heart Association meeting.

The researchers found that those who had their teeth scraped and cleaned regularly by a dentist or dental hygienist had a 24% lower risk of heart attack and a 13% lower risk of stroke when compared with those who never had a cleaning. Frequent cleaning was considered one or more times per year, and the benefit was observed in those who got a tooth scaling at least once per year.

“It appears that regular dental cleaning reduces bacterial growth that increases inflammation, possibly leading to heart disease and stroke,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “As part of your lifestyle and optimal health efforts, be sure to schedule regular trips to your dentist for a thorough cleaning. Remember, it’s all the little things that add up to being healthy and feeling great.”

They found that those who ate a typical western diet were twice as likely to have a
