How we can put an end to the constant struggle between parents and addictive mobile apps

Today it’s pretty solid to say that Smartphones and Tablets are becoming a bigger part of our life every passing year, something that was first a fancy gadget that you could use for more extra things instead of simply sending SMS or calling is now an essential part of our lives, that of course affects the newer generation. By the age of 7 the majority of children already own a mobile device, according to a study by Childwise [1] in the UK.

With all the known advantages of having a Smartphone device, it’s a great force that mature adults also have issues to control. Many studies suggest that Smartphones can be highly addictive and it damages our focus by scattering our attention [2][3][4], this is also no different for children. Too many people are getting addicted to games and apps, if paying attention at school was already difficult in the past, now it’s at least two times more difficult with our screens constantly requesting our attention.

But what if we didn’t have to battle against the devices? instead we could use similar and yet more wholesome strategies to teach our children what really matters!

With that in mind app affairs GmbH. has developed DINGS, a brand-new educational game born in Munich targeted for children in first and second grades, the game was designed to engage the player with obstacles, prizes in a very colorful and vivid design while at the same time challenging the player to answer maths and grammar questions. The main objective is using gamification and user experience (UX) standards to endorse and stimulate the player to keep playing a fun endless-runner game, while all the learning is happening in the background.

DINGS will first entice the player to have fun while all the tiresome and repetitive times/division tables and the usage of correct articles is being taught and learned in the background, a painless, effective and fun way to learn “through play“ which has shown already plenty of evidence of its advantages [5].

We currently have amazing devices in our pockets which allow us to come up with endless ideas on how we could put them to good use, it’s up to us to use this power wisely and in a beneficial way. DINGS is currently free for download with a few free lessons and it offers more than 70 lessons in the premium version, everything is taking place completely offline, without any ads and zero personal data collection, when it comes to people’s privacy that’s no game for us.

DINGS is not only a game, it’s rather a phenomena to bring back innovative and healthy apps to the market instead of copycats and dopamine-induced games that are extremely damaging for people. The game also brings great new teaching strategies which could hopefully inspire many teachers and a new wave of educational games that care whether the player is having an optimal balance of fun and knowledge.
