As the photovoltaic industry is geared for a massive expansion of its production capacity, Heterojunction Technology (HJT) is emerging as the most-sought-out-for next high-efficiency technology to enter the mainstream. With a quickly increasing number of companies working on HJT, the technology is likely to find a place in future plans of most of the leading PV manufacturers.

“After we discussed in our first HJT report last year if the technology could be the next big thing in cell/module manufacturing, this edition shows how it is now entering volume manufacturing,” said Shravan K. Chunduri, lead author of the TaiyangNews report.

While 2019 can be considered the year that piqued the industry’s interest in HJT technology, it looks like 2020 is going to open the doors of commercialization for HJT.

A key driver for HJT are its high efficiencies. Several companies and research centers have achieved 24% efficiency and clearly see a short-term increase to 24.5%, a level that won’t be reached by today’s standard technology. Other features, such as a simple manufacturing process flow with fewer steps than normal cells, a better temperature coefficient that results in higher output in hot climate and unmatched high bifaciality, which indicates the ability to generate power on both sides of the cell, are further advantages of HJT.

“Until recently prices for HJT solar cell production equipment have been much too high to be attractive for most big players, but that has now changed dramatically, opening the door to this high-potential solar cell technology,” said Michael Schmela, co-author of the report.

According to TaiyangNews research, the active installed capacity by end of 2020 will reach around 5.1 GW, a 50% increase compared to 3.4 GW in the previous year. For 2021, TaiyangNews expects production capacities to more than double to 10.6 GW, while announcements for global capacity expansions have already exceeded 50 GW.
