Rise in Women’s Heart Risk Linked to Sugary Drinks

New York, NY – May 2, 2012 -- A recent study suggests that drinking as little as two sweetened beverages a day may raise women’s risk for diabetes and high cholesterol. University of Oklahoma researchers followed over 4,000 individuals ages 45 to 84 over five years and monitored their sugar-sweetened beverage intake, along with weight, waist circumference, cholesterol and diabetes markers.

Women who drank two or more sugary drinks a day were four times more likely to develop high cholesterol and diabetes, and become obese, compared to women who drank one or no sugared drinks a day. Even those who didn’t gain weight were likely to develop heart disease and diabetes, suggesting weight gain is not necessarily a precursor to health problems associated with the drinks. The same results were not seen in men; the researchers suggested this was because women need fewer calories to develop negative impacts from sugary drinks.

“Although this study was focused on the consumption of sugary drinks, it’s important to note that that sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)—often used in sweetened drinks—are responsible for health issues, regardless of the source,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “Only two sugary drinks per day caused problems. The equivalent daily amount of sugar or HCFS from any other source is likely to have similar negative effects.”
