Third-sector insurer sponsors £15,000 triathlon fund-raiser

Markel UK, Leeds, April 30, 2012 - Markel UK, the specialist insurer which provides coverage for a wide range of charity and welfare interests, has announced a castle triathlon challenge to raise money for a wide range of charities.

There are three separate charity triathlons in the challenge, and they are part of an overall sporting franchise called the Markel Castle Triathlon Series. As title sponsor of the series, which takes place at castles across Europe, Markel decided to capitalise on the Olympic spirit by creating a summer of fund-raising events at Cholmondeley Castle on 24 June, Castle Howard on 22 July, and Hever Castle on September 30.

At each Castle, Markel will donate £5,000 to the winning team’s nominated charity. There are three people in each triathlon team - a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner - and the challenge is open to anyone from the age of 16 up. Because charity is the focus, all teams must create online sponsorship pages, ensuring that money is raised for many deserving causes.

Teams are free to enter as many triathlons as they want, and if any team enters all three castle challenges, it could potentially net £15,000 for its nominated charity. In addition to the charity prize, each member of a winning team will receive the latest iPad.

Markel is very keen to encourage participants from registered charities and welfare bodies, who can raise funds for their own organisations while attempting to win one of the cash prizes. Commenting on the competitions, Helen Walker, Markel’s marketing manager in Leeds, said: “We would love to see staff from care homes and other welfare organisations enter our triathlons. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for charity, and it doesn’t matter if you’re not a seasoned athlete or have never competed in a triathlon before. The important thing is to take part, have fun and support a worthy cause. It’s all about showing the Olympic spirit.”

If you would like to enter a team for one or more of the castle events, register your interest by emailing info@castletriathlonseries.co.uk.

Markel (UK) Limited is a leading specialist insurer providing insurance for a variety of professional, management, social welfare, charitable and speciality property/liability risks for organisations of all sizes.
