The “Everest of the Seas”: Single-handed, non-stop, unassisted round-the-world race

Bremen, 06 November 2020 – The Vendée Globe is the world’s toughest sailing challenge and regarded as the ultimate test of reliability, will and resilience. This Sunday, 8 November 2020 at 1:02 pm (CET), the ninth edition of the Vendée Globe will set sail from les Sables d’Olonne, France. 46-year-old British skipper Alex Thomson is participating in his fifth Vendée Globe this year. Following a third place in 2012/2013 and a close second in 2016/2017, he is widely considered as a favourite to take the coveted title in his all-new, radically designed HUGO BOSS – a showcase of state-of-the-art yachting technology and easily recognisable by its glossy black finish with a neon-pink coachroof, keel and rudders. As the Official Rope Supplier to the Alex Thomson Racing team since 2014, Gleistein Ropes has delivered the entire 3,000 metres of running rigging on the IMOCA class yacht, including customised high-performance lines specifically designed by the Gleistein Ropes R&D team and finished by its in-house rope-making specialists to cater to the extreme requirements anticipated on board of HUGO BOSS. Reliability is perhaps the single most important attribute required to win this gruelling race. “Obviously the goal is to go out there and win it. But to get there, you have to finish. And this race is very, very tough to finish. But, if we can get to that finish line, then I’m sure we’ll be in contention for the win. A win would certainly validate everything that we as a team, together with our partners, have put into this journey,” said Alex Thomson. The rigging from Gleistein Ropes is making a crucial contribution in ensuring this becomes a reality.

On Sunday 8 November 2020 at 1:02pm (CET), Alex Thomson and a further 32 other skippers will cast off for the 2020/2021 Vendée Globe to sail an arduous 24,296 nautical miles – solo, non-stop and unassisted – around the world.
