2012 Blessing of the Fleet

Bayou La Batre, AL (St. Margaret’s Annual Blessing of the Fleet) April 12, 2012: The 63rd Annual Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou La Batre, Alabama has been expanded to a full two-day festival for 2012. The event will be held on May 5 and 6, 2012 on the grounds of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, which is located at 13790 South Wintzell Avenue in Bayou La Batre, AL, which is located in South Mobile County.

Traditionally held only on the first Sunday of May, the expanded two-day 2012 Blessing of the Fleet is sponsored by the City of Bayou La Batre and BP. This year’s event will include a wide selection of family-friendly activities on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days. Festival admission is free.

Great food will be available from a variety of vendors both days, including traditional Bayou La Batre seafood dishes featuring shrimp, oysters and fish as well as a full Vietnamese menu prepared by "the locals", Baja Fish tacos and other Mexican food by "The Cruzin' Taco", hamburgers, hot dogs, desserts and more. In addition to regional festival fare, other activities festival-goers can enjoy throughout the weekend include arts and crafts exhibits, live music, children’s activities and train rides, bayou boat tours, bingo and more.

On Saturday, there will be a Gumbo Cook-off from 11 am - 2 p.m. and kayaking will be available throughout the day. On Sunday, mass will be held at 10 a.m. The Fleet Blessing land parade will begin at 2 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the boat parade. The official Fleet Blessing will be conducted by the Most Reverend Thomas J. Rodi, Archbishop of Mobile.

Participation in the land parade and boat parade is open to anyone who would like to participate. There is no fee to be in either parade, though pre-registration is required. The boat parade registration form can be downloaded from http://fleetblessing.org/forms/boat-parade.pdf. Individuals interested in being in the land parade should call Marcia Stork at 251-377-6181.
