Stem Cell Treatments Take Alzheimer’s Patients Down Memory Lane

03-30-2012 11:01 AM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: StemGenex

StemGenex™, a US based company, is helping Alzheimer’s patients regain cognitive function through the use of stem cells.

La Jolla, CA, March 30, 2012 -- Alzheimer’s is a heartbreaking disease. According to Alz.org, there are currently over five million Americans living with Alzheimer's. The disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and the disease has cost Americans over two billion dollars in related medical expenses. However, there has not been any really progress on preventing the disease or reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s until now.

StemGenex, (http://www.stemgenex.com) a Southern California based company, is one of the industry leaders within the stem cell community. The company is pleased to be heading up some of the nation’s most successful treatments for Alzheimer’s. FoxNews.com recently featured the many benefits associated with stem cell treatment in patients enduring early to progressive stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The Fox News article explained how the advances in stem cell therapy are reversing signs of the disease, but also improving the public’s conservative perception of stem cell use within the medical community. StemGenex couldn’t agree more with the positive points in the Fox News Article. The company has been diligently working to improve its clients’ lives for the past five years. The company has observed a patient diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s symptoms reduced 75% after receiving an adult adipose-derived stem cell treatment. This response was so surprising StemGenex is establishing a research study to scientifically document the benefits of stem cell treatment.

Dr. Lawrence Goldstein, professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell Program, recently noted advancements in Stem Cell therapy via a media release. Dr. Goldstein’s comments were a narrative to the work currently being done at UC San Diego School of Medicine. The school created in vitro models of genetic and sporadic forms of Alzheimer’s disease, using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) from patients who suffered from the neurodegenerative disorder. The results have been phenomenal to say the least. Imagine the possibilities of life span, and quality of life in general, if more people could benefit from stem cell treatments. Especially, those faced with Alzheimer’s.

UC Irvine’s research supports UC San Diego’s similar data, as well as what StemGenex has been promoting to their clientele all along. The conclusion? Stem cells secrete a protein creating more neural connections, improving cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, and other auto-immune and neurological disorders. “Our company has been on a mission to support public knowledge of all the benefits connected to stem cell treatments,” says Rita Alexander of StemGenex™, “What is remarkable with finding a cure for Alzheimer’s is the improvements made available through companies like StemGenex and continued research from esteemed medical and science personnel, like Dr. Goldstien.”

Stem cell treatment for people with Alzheimer’s disease is just that- a treatment. The stem cells used by the team at StemGenex are innocuous. The company uses cells derived from a patient’s own fat. These powerhouse cells have the ability to quickly repair and replace damaged cells. There may not be a cure for Alzheimer’s disease at this time, but the current research, and treatments, involving stem cells is both provocative and suggest we are heading in the right direction.

Right now stem cell treatments and therapies are helping Alzheimer’s patients by providing the brain with stronger connections between neurons. In scientific terms, stem cells used in treatment are not directly improving cognition function, but, instead, the stem cells are being transformed into new neurons. This is caused by brain-derived neurotropic secretion. The secretion increases the number of neurons and connections between neurons.

Although it has not been discovered yet, researches are looking for a way to have stem cells eventually reduce the number of plaques and tangles in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. This research may, one day, lead to stem cells offering a complete cure of the disease. StemGenex is looking forward to the day they can have a patient walk out of the company’s office completely free of any neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. Until this day, the company is happy to continue offering symptom relief, hope and retardation of a brain’s deterioration process.
