RES Presents "Definition", a Dictionary Site for Writers

A month ago, RES introduced a definition site designed for readers. Today, RES unveils the second step, a major new definitions site designed for writers, with unique content not found anywhere else. Better yet, it's free and it's not overwhelmed with ads.

The Definition site not only gives definitions, but lets visitors delve into the subtleties of what the word means. It's designed to help visitors find the right word, without all the clutter that writers don't need.

The Definition web site has been completely rethought to make it useful for writing. Designed for browsing and leafing through, just like a paper dictionary, it reveals its sources through what is called a semantic concordance, a list of published examples where a word was used with that precise meaning. This is unique to this site, no other free dictionary site does anything like it.

The rhyme section is another unique feature. For most words it provides a list of words that rhyme, with the best rhymes first, all the way up to half-rhymes or near-rhymes. For those who are tired of pronunciation keys with strange symbols that no one understands, this site provides plain and clear pronunciation symbols and homonyms.

A leader in the area of reference web sites, RES already runs some popular dictionary sites. After analysis of the logs from billions of dictionary site visits, RES lexicographers saw that there are two different types of users of dictionary sites. There are those whose visits are long and frequent, who look up several words, exploring different senses and related terms, and there are others who look for the definition of a single word and leave.
