Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Names Muriel Corcoran as Board President, Kevin Spellman as Vice President

(Center Moriches, NY) — Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck has announced that Muriel Corcoran has been named Board President and Kevin Spellman as its Vice President.

Ms. Corcoran has been on the camp’s Board of Directors since 1995 and previously served as its Secretary for the past eight years. She replaces Tom Chieffo, who was Board President for the past nine years and will continue to remain on the board.

A resident of East Moriches, Ms. Corcoran is a retired nurse. She worked at Southside Hospital and Brookhaven National Laboratory in Medical Research before becoming Director of Nurses at Westhampton Nursing Home in 1969. In 1974, she joined Cedar Lodge Nursing Home in Center Moriches as its Nursing Director. She became the Administrator in 1979 and held that position until her retirement in 2007.

In addition, Ms. Corcoran was active in the New York State Nursing Home Association and served in several officers’ positions in the local chapter of the Suffolk County Nursing Home Association and the Intercounty Nursing Home Association. She was also active in the New York State Health Care Facilities’ Nursing Homes Legislative Committee, Patient Care Committee, Legal Committee and Public Relations Committee.

Mr. Spellman, a Manorville resident, is a partner with the Smithtown law firm Devitt Spellman Barrett, LLP. Among his responsibilities is Committee Chairman of the annual Duck Race & Duck BBQ, which is held at the camp each September. He also donates his time with Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Program, in which he travels to other countries to build homes for people who need affordable housing.

Both Ms. Corcoran and Ms. Spellman are also members of The Rotary Club of the Moriches. Ms. Corcoran has been with the Rotary Club since 1989 and Mr. Spellman has served since 2000. He served as the club’s President from 2003 to 2004.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck challenges children and young adults ages 6-21 with disabilities to reach beyond their physical and developmental challenges and experience all that life has to offer. Throughout the program, campers participate in typical summer camp activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck was created by members of the Moriches Rotary Club in 1946. Located on the shores of Kaler's Pond on eastern Long Island, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is funded entirely by donations and is a special place where children and young adults ages 6-21 with physical and developmental disabilities can experience first hand the pleasures that an active life has to offer. They participate in a wide range of activities especially designed for those who are in wheelchairs as well as those who are ambulatory. These activities include swimming, boating, arts and crafts, petting zoo, talent shows, cook-outs, games and a Carnival Day. The program also provides educational activities in areas such as nature, arts, fire safety and communication skills.
