Press release from: Adelphi University

GARDEN CITY, NY, March 2012—Adelphi University is pleased to announce the appointment of Mitchell Nagler ’05 M.A., LMHC as Assistant Director of the Student Counseling Center/Director of the Bridges to Adelphi Program. Mr. Nagler is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and brings a wealth of experience in administration and in working with people with Asperger's Syndrome, Autism, Social Anxiety Disorders and other nonverbal learning disabilities. Before this, Mr. Nagler was the Director of the Adelphi Social Training Center. He has taught classes on personality theory, psychodynamic theory, and the autism spectrum at Adelphi’s Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies.

Mr. Nagler is primarily responsible for overseeing The Bridges to Adelphi Program, which falls under the administration of the Student Counseling Center, where he supervises five graduate students who deliver the majority of the Program’s services, and provides Program services to ten other students. He also spearheads interactions with the campus community and works to increase campus awareness and training through workshops, in addition to managing community outreach to local school districts and related organizations. Mr. Nagler interacts with the Program’s 50 students on a daily basis, assisting them with any issues they may have, advocating for them, and providing a ‘safe haven.’

The Bridges to Adelphi Program is uniquely designed to enhance college life for students with nonverbal learning disabilities by providing help with organizational skills, time management, independent living skills, and social skills training. Based on a foundation of social learning and cognitive behavioral strategies, Bridges to Adelphi is a multidimensional program involving coaching, learning strategies, behavioral modeling, and peer mentoring to address students’ needs in social, academic, and vocational areas.

Previously a successful businessman, Mr. Nagler retired from the corporate world to pursue his goal of becoming a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in 2001. Besides his role at Adelphi, he runs his own psychology practice specializing in young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and related conditions, with offices in Merrick and New York City. He is also affiliated with the Asperger Center for Education and Training and has worked with the New York University Child Study Center's Asperger Institute. He currently lives in Oceanside, NY with his wife. They have three daughters.

Adelphi’s Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers free, private, and confidential services to all currently enrolled Adelphi students. Staffed by a psychiatrist, licensed clinical psychologists, and social workers, the Student Counseling Center provides individual and group counseling, workshops, outreach and consultation, crisis intervention, and drug and alcohol education. The Center is equipped to guide students through numerous problems such as stress, family issues, relationship issues, depression, loneliness, and other issues. SCC also makes literature and additional resources available to students.
