Press release from: ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair

ART SAN DIEGO (ASD) has launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $25,000 to commission 15+ art groups to create “Art Labs”, which are site-specific works in conjunction with the fair.

San Diego, CA, March 12, 2012 -- ART SAN DIEGO (ASD) has launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $25,000 to commission 15+ art groups to create “Art Labs”, which are site-specific works in conjunction with the fair. Commissions will range from $500 to $2,000 per project. The “Art Labs” have become one of the most exciting features of ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair, creating a platform to showcase the diversity of San Diego’s talented artistic community. The 2011 ASD fair had 19 sites from North Park to Tijuana to the Airport, with some locations hosting multiple projects. Approximately 250 artists, curators and volunteers were involved. Click here for more information or to contribute.

“All of us at Art San Diego understand the importance of compensating artists for their work. We feel very strongly about it and want to set the stage this year with a commitment that all future local non-commercial art involvement in the fair be fairly compensated – either through commerce at the fair or commissions,” said Ann Berchtold, co-founder of ASD.

For 2012 ASD is seeking proposals for projects that promote a CreativeClash:· Projects that engage art communities to work across disciplines and cultures exploring ways to activate cities and the urban environments through artistic interventions.· Projects that establish unique partnerships and result in unusual and unanticipated collaborations.

“We are looking for projects that break into the public realm in surprising ways, reaching people beyond traditional limitations of class, age, race and education,” Berchtold added. “‘Art Labs’ will feature single and multi-artist exhibitions, performance, urban multimedia installations, cooperative gallery and institution events and exhibitions, and music performances at locations around town: showcasing the diversity of the sd-tj artistic community.”

Projects selected for the “Art Lab” designation will run during the ART SAN DIEGO event (Sept. 6-9) in various locations in Balboa Park and throughout San Diego. They can be sited at indoor or outdoor public spaces, but must invite participation by the general public. An RFP will be released in late-April and is open to all disciplines including visual, performance, multimedia, fiber and online/virtual.

“Art Labs” will be promoted as a key part of ART SAN DIEGO and ARTS MONTH. Artists who are confirmed by mid-July will be featured in the show catalog which achieved over 80,000 impressions (print and online readership) in 2010. “Art Labs” will also receive special promotion through our email distribution list sent to over 10,000 collectors, our social network channels, IPhone applications, and interactive map.

About ART SAN DIEGO: The stage for ASD is Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre cultural and recreational oasis in the heart of San Diego — the largest such urban park in America. Balboa Park features a wide variety of museums, exhibitions, performing arts, world-famous gardens, recreational facilities, restaurants, and other attractions that serve over 12 million visitors annually. With New Art City, ASD aims to insert itself as a key actor in this production, nurturing and strengthening San Diego’s art scene with a dynamic agenda.

ASD 2011 experienced tremendous success – exceeding targets for attendance with over 8,000 visitors and reporting strong sales by galleries. In 2012 ASD anticipates that more than 60 leading galleries from the USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Asia will be taking part. In addition to the gallery booths, special features include gallery-curated exhibitions, “Spotlight Artists” featured in solo-artist exhibitions, video-based works featured in “IN/TO Creating Short Film Program”, artistic interventions in public spaces “Art Labs”, San Diego focused exhibitions “Made in San Diego”, and the introduction of emerging artists and curators with the “LaunchPad Program”.

ASD offers a strong diversity of exhibitors and hopes to attract a new generation of art collectors by introducing work that can be purchased within the limitations of almost any budget. A strong emphasis is placed on providing stimulating conversation about art acquisition, educational opportunities for both novice and experienced collectors, and personal talks with artists, film-makers, and designers.
