BiU’s beach clean team donned with gloves, bags and litter pickers

A group of litter picking heroes from BiU, UK’s leading energy consultant based on the Fylde Coast, took to St Anne’s beach to voluntarily clean-up - filling dozens of bags of beach waste, and removing plastic pollution, during Keep Britain Tidy’s Clean September Event.

The clean-up, organised by BiU in conjunction with Love My Beach and Fylde Council, allowed staff to look after the golden sands of St Annes safely with gloves, high-vis, bags and pickers at the ready for some socially distance volunteering.

Staff at the utility consultancy removed countless items of discarded beach trash from chocolate bar wrappers to plastic toys, plastic rings from bottle tops to hair bands, and clocked up a collective 1155 minutes towards the nation’s Keep Britain Tidy Big Clean September week total.

“BiU’s litter heroes collected so much waste from beach goers including dozens of pieces of plastic such as crisp packets to discarded toys.” Anthony Mayall, Chief Commercial Officer at BiU, and one of the BiU litter heroes, commented.

He continued, “I am always proud of the work our volunteers at BiU do, and today we made sure bags of plastic and general waste didn’t end up in the Irish Sea.

“Whilst we did find enough litter to keep us occupied, we were pleasantly surprised at how clean the beach was – congratulations to Fylde Council!”

BiU are proud to be a Love My Beach accredited business with a pledge to use less and recycle more, and ranked 10th in the country for protecting the environment and 32nd for giving something back in the recent Sunday Times Top 100 Best Small Companies To Work For awards.

Shaun Clarkson, Chief Operating Officer at BiU, and another beach clean volunteer, comments “Be responsible is one of our 4 values at BiU, and today the team made me, the company, and community proud to take action against littering and plastic pollution.

“I was more than happy to take our litter picking heroes to St Anne’s pier for a takeaway chippy as a well-deserved seaside dinner afterwards!”

This is not the first time BiU has cleaned up the beaches of the Fylde Coast, with various events taken place over recent years. All staff at BiU are gifted a day a year for volunteering, and in the last two years staff have; slept on the streets of Blackpool fundraising for the Big Sleepout; completed a Christmas trolley dash which produced over 475 meals donated by local business for Fylde Food Bank; and over 20 staff spent their time at RockFM’s Christmas Toy Appeal HQ in Preston sorting gifts to help Santa’s elves meet the needs of local children on Christmas morning.
