Robert Berry Gallery Announces Immortal, New Show Featuring Works by Artist Alex G. Cao

New York, NY (September 17, 2020)—Robert Berry Gallery, a premier New York City-based art gallery dedicated to ground-breaking art, announced its new virtual exhibition Immortal by artist Alex G. Cao. The show will open on Monday, September 21st at www.robertberrygallery.com.

“Immortal is a show about memories, merging the magic of antiquity with modern-day art,” stated Alex G. Cao, artist. “This new series of mosaics features popular icons, utilizing tiny underlying images—like Frida Kahlo, the Statue of Liberty and Robert Indiana’s LOVE logo—to create the mosaic, making for a dialogue between the two images present in the mosaic. The words immortal and stainless-steel share the same word in Chinese; these works were created on canvas with mirrored stainless steel, presenting legendary icons in a new way.”

Cao immigrated with his family to the United States from China in the 1980s and studied fashion photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology, working in that discipline for over a decade. While visiting Napoli, Italy in 1996, Cao was impressed by the ideal forms featured in the antiquities and mosaics of ancient Rome.

“I started making fine art utilizing my experience and sensibility as a photographer to create something entirely new,” Mr. Cao said. “I wanted to create astonishing mosaics that utilized the sensibility from antiquity, with modern-day images, resulting in something completely new that I had never seen before. These pieces are created digitally, printed on a canvas, and on top it’s a stainless-steel mirror surface. When you look into the mirror, you see yourself, you see mortality; I wanted the viewer to feel spiritually immortal.”

Works are all created from canvas with mirror stainless steel and are available in 22 x 22 in. / 55 x 55 cm and 42 x 42 in. / 107 x 107 cm sizes.
