Greenbean Recycle Launches Second Machine at Tufts University

Greenbean Recycle Launches Second Machine at Tufts University

Somerville, MA — March 1, 2012 — A Greenbean Recycle reverse vending machine located on the first floor of the campus center of Tufts University is actively used by recycling enthusiasts. For the past two weeks, the Tufts community has recycled over 1,100 containers and saved almost 200 kwh of energy through Greenbean. The colorful machine, affectionately named “Jesse” in honor of a facilities service manager who has been at the school for 30 years, offers a novel approach to recycling with real-time analytics, social media, and gaming.

The machine is engaging and simple to use. After setting up a profile on Greenbean’s website, users can feed empty containers into the machine and get bottle and can deposits refunded directly into their PayPal account or donated to a charity. The Greenbean profile also allows users to access an instant tally of how many containers they’ve diverted from landfills, Kwh of energy they’ve saved, and see new challenges and competitions rewarding top recyclers with additional prizes.

The Greenbean reverse vending machine at Tufts is the second of its kind. Another machine has been in operation at MIT since August 2011 and has recycled over 33,000 containers. With two machines up and running, the company will reset its statistics chart at the beginning of each month to give the schools a fair chance to compete against each other to see who can recycle the most.

The company has recently added Relay for Life (MIT) and Relay for Life (Tufts) to the list of charities that students at the respective universities can choose to donate to. Users can create teams, compete against each other and raise money for great causes. Dorms, Greek life and student clubs can now be recognized as the greenest organization on campus with Greenbean’s interactive platform with easily comparable statistics on energy saved and materials recycled.

The company is completely revamping its website and touch screen based on extensive feedback from current users such as the brothers of Kappa Sigma at MIT. With over 7,400 containers recycled so far and hundreds of dollars donated to their charity – The Fisher House Foundation, the fraternity has been the top recycling team on their campus. Thanks to them and more than 500 other users, Greenbean will be incorporating a number of new features that will enhance both the team competition aspect and the challenge interaction.

Greenbean, a software technology company, transforms existing reverse vending machine technology into a gaming experience. Most recently covered by the Boston Globe and becoming a semi-finalist at the MIT 100K ACCELERATE competition, the company will be installing a third machine at Brandeis University by the end of the spring semester. Initially targeting colleges and universities, Greenbean plans to expand to airports, stadiums, condominiums and anyplace with a high traffic of recyclable materials.

Greenbean Recycle is a software technology company that increases recycling rates by incorporating real time analytics, gaming, and social media into its recycling machine and website process.
