Empedia.com is a community-based encyclopedia where already existing information on the Internet is complemented with personal and experience-based input from its users. The goal of Empedia is to provide a database where anyone can contribute with their unique personal experiences and take part of nuanced and efficient information about any given topic.

Whereas Wikipedia is a great place to find out facts about, for example, the search engine Google, Empedia can complement the Wikipedia article on Google by allowing users to add personal, valuable and unique information. For example, how the founders are in person, what it’s like to work there or whether the facts on Wikipedia about Google are accurate.

Empedia stands out from other web sites as it provides tools for its users to easily add personal and unique information to over 3,8 million Wikipedia articles. Empedia also provides the possibility for users to create their own topics from scratch which might or might not exist on Wikipedia already.

Users can post polls, ask questions or simply join in on the discussion about any given topic.

Joakim Fischer, co-founder of Empedia says:

“The ultimate goal with Empedia is to extract unique information that exists within every person’s mind and publish that next to already existing information. If we can accomplish that in a broad manner, this service will be revolutionary for information findings online. We want to make Empedia accessible for everyone, everywhere and always.”

Relevant information about most topics are available on the Internet today in many different places and many different languages but nowhere is it gathered in one place in a structural and efficient manner. Empedia aims to solve this problem.

Empedia has opened up the door for a social encyclopedia and it has also built a structure that makes it easy for users to add information, something that is currently quite complicated at Wikipedia.

Empedia finds support by Jan Ainali, chairman of Wikimedia Sweden. He says:

“Empedia is a new and exciting project that has understood the importance of social as well as gathering personal information to topics. Empedia makes clever use of the Wikipedia API and I personally think it could complement Wikipedia in many positive ways. We both have the same purposes with our services - to provide knowledge openly and freely to everyone. I am looking forward to see Empedia grow and become the great service I believe it will be.”
