Immigration levels tripled in Canada in May

After two consecutive months of tortoise paced immigration levels, Canadas immigration started getting boosted again in May.

Canada invited 11,000 immigrants when compared to just 4,000
immigrants, invited in April.

The top 5 countries, which were the sources of these immigrants were India, China, the Philippines, the US, and Nigeria.

This new data given by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada(IRCC) completely indicates that Canadas immigration system is
starting to normalize even in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

In early 2020, Canada had a good start until the coronavirus led to theimposition of travel restraints and disturbances to the operations of
IRCC and other members of the federal government.

In any given month, some 25,000-35,000 people officially become permanent residents of Canada usually.
But, Canadas immigration levels fell in March and then fell further in the following month.

Nonetheless, immigration levels almost got tripled in May in comparisonwith April.

The greater immigration levels in May show us that IRCC is able to process more applications when compared to the start of the pandemic.

It also conveys to us that more immigrants are exempted from Canadas travel restrictions and successfully completed their landing process in
May.

Even with Canada's current travel restrictions, candidates who have a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR), taken before march 18 can enter Canada. The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) was the principal source of new
permanent residents, with 3,000 immigrants arriving in May.

Nearly 2,000 of the new permanent residents, entered the country in May were the spouses and partners of Canadian citizens and Canadian
permanent residents. They are also exempted from the travel restrictions
of Canada.

IRCCs data also reveals that 1,300 settlers gained permanent residence as skilled workers, principally through the FSWP (Federal Skilled
Worker Program).

Another 2,000 applicants obtained permanent residency status through the CEC (Canadian Experience Class) program.

Express Entry and PNP draws have been conducted frequently since the beginning of March.
IRCC has issued around 35,100 invitations to apply (ITA) for permanent residence, primarily to candidates through CEC and PNP. The reason for
this is that it would be more comfortable for these candidates to complete their permanent residence process than the Express Entry
candidates who are overseas. The premise of this policy was that most CEC and PNP candidates are presently living in Canada, so they are less
likely to encounter coronavirus interruptions than those who are abroad.

But, on Wednesday, IRCC reassumed inviting the candidates of FSWP under Express Entry. Some candidates under FSWP also presently live in
Canada, so it should be just as simple for them to finish the PR process as CEC and PNP candidates who are currently residing in the country.
Furthermore, starting all-program Express Entry draws implies that IRCC is equipping to welcome even more immigrants from abroad by the
end of 2020 and in early 2021.

Given the recovery of Canadas immigration levels in May, plus the fact
that more immigrants tend to complete their landing process during the
summer, we should expect Canada's immigration levels to continue to
rise in the coming months.
