Hunton Engineering Design : MEREWAY TILTING WEIR (2019-2020)

Huntons have recently designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned a new control structure on the river Crane in London. The new gate comes complete with an automated control system responding to fluctuations in the river level with control allowing for precise level management.

Huntons lead the mechanical and electrical design of the gate system for the environment agency and delivered the M&E package on site. The design was carried out with close integration with the Environment Agency to ensure all of their needs were fulfilled for this project.

The new tilting weir is 7m wide and 3m tall and fabricated entirely from 1.4404 (316 grade) stainless steel. The control system operates a Rotork actuator which rotates the main drive shaft to raise or lower the gate via 150mm thick aluminium bronze pinions. These in turn drive the gate via 120mm thick stainless steel gear teeth to provide total confidence in the reliability of the drive system. Huntons carried out the entire fabrication in house including the 9.5m long drive shaft machined using our specialist equipment.

Additionally a 9.5m span pedestrian bridge was installed as part of the works including class 3 parapet guard rails.

Using past experience Huntons pre-assembled and tested the entire gate, hinge and drive drive system for the weir in our workshop in Kent reducing the time on site during installation. This also gave the client a chance to inspect the gate prior to delivery to site.
