Real-time high-resolution mid-infrared optical coherence tomography

The potential to increase the depth of penetration of the optical coherence tomography system by using a light source with a wavelength longer has been known since the beginning of the technique in the early 1990s. However, the development of mid-infrared optical coherence tomography has long been challenged by the maturity and loyalty of optical components in this spectral region, resulting in the acquisition of slow, low sensitivity and poor axial resolution. In this work, the mid-infrared spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system operating at a wavelength of 4 .mu.m and a center of the axial resolution of 8.6 um indicated. The system generates a two-dimensional cross-sectional image in real-time is enabled by the high brightness 0.9- 4.7 um mid-infrared supercontinuum source with a pulse repetition rate of 1 MHz for lighting and upconversion broadband bandwidth of more than 1 um from 3.58 to 4.63 pM up to 820-865 nm, where the 800-nm standard spectrometers can be used for rapid detection. Images produced by the mid-infrared system compared to that delivered by state-of-the-art ultra-high-resolution near-infrared optical coherence tomography system operating at 1.3 pM, and potential applications and samples suitable for this technology are discussed. Thus, practically mid-infrared optical coherence tomography system first shown, with direct application in real-time non-destructive testing for defect inspection and measurement of the thickness of the sample shows a strong scattering at shorter wavelengths.
