A “social” male’s wig for mental health

Hair loss is one of those natural phenomena that affects almost every man sooner or later. However, there is still a stigma attached to this topic. In 2017 Kerry Montgomery and colleagues made the scientific discovery that hair loss in men can still trigger generalized and social anxiety as well as depression (BMJ Open, doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2016-015468).
Although there are now drug treatments for hereditary hair loss in men, these are often associated with side effects that can affect the intimate life. “Hair systems" were also invented. These are half-cap wigs like a toupee that are glued to the smoothly shaved upper side of the head. This can lead to skin issues and very high maintenance costs.

So, over the years the classic full-cap wig for men has become a luxury product. And this despite the fact that studies such as those by Montgomy et al. prove that the classic wig is a helpful and gentle means of alleviating the suffering of male hair loss: "Wearing wigs was reported as increasing social confidence; however, the concealment it afforded was also reported as both reducing fear of negative evaluation and maintaining anxiety. (Montgomery, White, Thompson; BMJ Open 2017)

The study also came to this conclusion: "Worry about not wearing a wig was related to higher levels of depression, anxiety and social anxiety, and with 65% of participants reporting worry about affording new wigs, it suggests the financial burden of affording wigs could lead to additional distress in patients already reporting significant levels of social anxiety, depression and anxiety.

This situation is all the more drastic in countries with low purchasing power. Many men in emerging markets and third world countries usually cannot afford to buy full-cap wigs of high quality, or even no wig at all.
