First Nations Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Communities
The inaugural First Nations Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Communities will bring together a diverse group of delegates to open conversation on the subject of sustainable and appropriate building options for Canada’s First Nations communities.“While recent media attention has been focused on the conditions at the Attawapiskat reserve, the crisis regarding infrastructure in Canadian First Nations communities has been prevalent for years,” says Vivian Manasc, Conference Co-Chair. “Lack of funding, overcrowding and poorly built structures are just some of the issues being blamed for the dire circumstances. In response to this ongoing crisis, the Sustainable Buildings Consortium is holding the First Nations Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Communities.”
The First Nations Conference on Sustainable Buildings and Communities will offer an excellent selection of speakers, including Chief Clarence Louie, Charles Woods, Dr. Phyllis Cardinal, Lorraine Fowlow, Wanda Dalla Costa, and many more.
The Conference is expecting 200 delegates ranging from First Nations Elders and Council Leaders, to Environmental Scientists, Architects, Engineers, Sustainability Leaders, Educators and Students.
The Sustainable Buildings Consortium is a non-profit research institute dedicated to green buildings/green materials research and development, as well as public policy advocacy related to the integration of environmentally preferable standards for buildings and communities. The Consortium was created by Manasc Isaac Architects in 1999. Its vision is to reduce the environmental footprint and enhance the quality of life in buildings, by developing new materials, systems and strategies that enable others to achieve their goals of designing and constructing sustainable buildings.
This vision is realized through research, product design, teaching, and holding conferences related to the design of sustainable buildings and communities.
