ENECO Named In CNBC's Top 50 Low-Carbon Pioneers List

05-17-2007 08:20 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: ENECO, Inc.

(May 17th 2007) – Salt Lake City – Following the creation of its UK subsidiary ENECO Europe in September 2006, Salt Lake-based energy technology specialist ENECO Inc. has received its first major piece of independent recognition in Europe this month, being named amongst the top 50 low-carbon pioneers in a list produced by CNBC European Business.

The news follows on the back of a major deal signed by the parent company and PROTERRA ENERGY to supply highly-efficient green energy and environmental systems for utilities and city district power, a market estimated to be worth not less than $2 billion over the next 7 years.

The CNBC list focuses on ranking emerging businesses that have connected climate change to their bottom line and are profiting from it, and includes industry pioneers who are creating new low-emission technologies and new-market trading platforms.

ENECO’s Thermal Chip technology certainly fits this description as it is capable of drastically reducing energy consumption and therefore carbon emissions in a number of sectors, such as smelting plants and the automotive industry, largely through economically converting waste heat into electricity. Not only can this help lower energy costs for end-users, it also opens up the opportunity for qualifying companies to generate carbon credits.

“Being able to deliver significant cost and emissions savings through energy efficiency is an ability that is massively in demand in today’s world and we certainly believe that our Thermal Chips have that ability,” adds ENECO’s CEO, Dr. Lew Brown.

“One significant area of interest is industrial plants, which exhaust huge amounts of heat as part of their daily operation. For owners of these plants, such as metal smelters, a reduction of a few percent in the factory’s electricity bill can have a major impact on the business. We are already talking to a number of companies in this sector.”

About ENECO’s technology
ENECO’s Thermal Chip technology is in some respects similar to a fuel cell, but a fuel cell converts the chemical energy of a fuel to electricity whereas a Thermal Chip converts heat energy to electricity. Its energy density (a measure of power production for a given weight or size) is five times better than current lithium-ion-batteries and two to four times better than future micro fuel cell capabilities projected for 2010. The Thermal Chip has the following key characteristics:

- Energy density efficiencies far in excess of all other available technologies.
- Reduced weight and size to fit with the new portable power needs of consumer electronics.
- Semiconductor technology that allows for efficient manufacturing, high reliability, long life, and low maintenance.
- Ability to convert waste heat economically and directly into electric power without moving parts to wear or make noise.
- Readily scaleable from very small to very large applications without losing efficiency or cost effectiveness.
