Lectures, flash mobs and Instagram marathons: What STEM is FEM community is doing at quarantine

STEM is FEM is a charity project launched by Gamingtec. It unites girls interested in studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. While staying at home during the quarantine, the project organizers offered various activities to the community, and the girls participated in them with great enthusiasm. They learned to be eco-friendly, recorded a challenging video presentation "My Superpower", and attended a zoom lecture about violence and abuse in relationships with a psychologist.

The organizers of the educational project STEM is FEM hold educational modules every two months. The next one takes place online in the middle of June; its first stage (the qualifying contest) has already finished, and its educational part will be dedicated to 3D modeling and printing. To keep the participants engaged in between the modules, the STEM is FEM team creates various activities that engage girls in studying and communication with the other members of the community.

On World Earth Day, the girls had an opportunity to take part in an Instagram marathon. In Stem is Fem account, there were published tips and tricks on how to live more eco-friendly lifestyle and what to do to conserve and protect natural resources . The participants learnt how to follow simple yet effective tips: they separated trash into categories, got ideas on how to reuse old clothes, studied marking of different grades of plastic and learnt what should they do with it.

When quarantine flash mobs gained world popularity, STEM is FEM community decided to record their own. The result was amazing: the girls showed their superpower. They made short videos and showed themselves drawing on a tablet, juggling, doing bead cards, training a dog, playing a ukulele, coding, taking pictures, and doing other activities. The final video became viral and received a lot of likes and shares in social media.

In a partnership with United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine, STEM is FEM organized an online lecture about violence and abuse in relationships. The UNFPA psychologist talked to the girls about unhealthy behavior and collapsed models of relationships. There was a questions-and-answer session, so the girls could clarify their doubts. The lecture passed in a friendly atmosphere, and all the participants enjoyed it a lot.

"We have organized STEM is FEM community to provide the participants not only with education, but also with support . This is why we have invited a psychologist to talk to them about interpersonal relationships. It is easier to achieve greater results in education and career when a girl is supported by her family and people closest to her. Practical recommendations will help schoolgirls to choose the safest communication patterns and protect themselves in different situations," said Sapar Karyagdyyev, CEO at Gamingtec.
