While on a visit to South Africa to visit TIAS ARMS grantees and children, Founder Joanne Baker was forced to stop her travels and was isolated for fourteen days as the Covid 19 pandemic raged. What promises to be a spell-binding segment of TIAS ARMS 11th Annual, now Virtual, Tea Party fundraising event, June 13, 2020 via Zoom, is Joanne's story relating her struggle to get back into the United States. It will lift your spirits and renew your confidence in the resilience of people and the dedication of our California Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Harley Rouda's offices to help her get home.TIAS ARMS will deliver a "Tea Gift Box" filled with gourmet teas, delectable goodies, paper tea cup, seed packets and pamphlet with pictures and information on the organizations they support to all virtual Tea attendees. TIAS ARMS reached out into the community to partner with Laguna Beach local businesses owned by Chocolatier, Leigh Sauser, and gourmet tea creator, Lan Zentil of Jadetiger Tea. Leigh's professional team is creating the delicious food, including her chocolate. Lan is providing the specialty teas to be placed in the tea boxes. Leigh's team will be packing and decorating the boxes for distribution.
The virtual tea party will be held on Zoom, Saturday, June 13, 2020 from 11am - 12:30 pm PDT. Attendees will "meet" a special guest speaker zoomed in from South Africa. Expect a fun time as participants compete in the traditional Tea Party hat contest, complete with a prize for the best hat. An auction will offer items that benefit the children, like shoes and high caloric food parcels. Other items include a genuine Durban Curry dinner, delivered to the door ready to serve. And what promises to be the highlight of the event, Joanne's story, will relate her harrowing journey to visit their Grantees and the children they serve amid the beginning of the raging Covid 19 pandemic and her incredible struggle to get back to the United States.
Joanne, a native of South Africa, founded TIAS ARMS in 2001 with the mission to provide a dignified, nurturing and compassionate environment for orphaned or abandoned children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa. TIAS ARMS has raised over $930,000 for grassroots grantees in South Africa. And, 93 cents on the dollar goes directly to food, shelter, clothing, education, and support for orphaned, abandoned, and ill children, all impacted by HIV/AIDS and now the Covid 19 epidemic. Money raised provides supportive services, from high calorie food parcels, to school supplies, to fresh garden vegetables, to hospice care for the children when that might be needed.
"AIDS, hunger and basic needs for the children in South Africa do not go away because of Covid 19. I feel stronger than ever that our outreach is essential and am re-inspired to continue in our fundraising efforts. 'It's for the children!'," Joanne said.
Chocolatier, Leigh Sauser, has been making and selling European style chocolate for 40 years, and she's still eating chocolate every day. Selling at local Farmer's Markets and by mail order, Sauser offers more than 20 different, mainly chocolate, creations and will also customize baskets and novelties. Leigh has been involved with TIAS ARMS for the past ten years providing chocolate and decadent goodies for their fund-raising teas and wine tasting events.
