Brachytherapy is also known as seed implantation or interstitial radiation therapy, is a type of radiation therapy in which small radioactive pellets are placed directly into the body. Brachytherapy is usually recommended for early-stage cancer treatment that develops slowly. For high-risk cancer, brachytherapy with external radiation can be used. Brachytherapy, however, is not suitable sometimes. For instance, for the treatment of men with urinary problems or men with larger prostate glands, cannot be treated with this therapy.

However, it can be done by taking hormone therapy to shrink the prostate. For placing the radioactive pellets, imaging techniques such as the transrectal ultrasound, CT scans, and MRIs are used. Nevertheless,the exact dose of radiation needed is measured using advanced computer programs.
Whereas, in external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), the radiation beams are focused on the targeted area or glands for the treatment of earlier-stage cancer. Based on EBRT techniques it is categorized in different types of therapy such as three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and proton beam radiation therapy. The 3D-CRT technique makes use of specialized computers to map the location of cancer and then uses radiation beams to target the cancer cells.
IMRT is a more advanced form of the 3D-CRT therapy that uses a computer-driven machine that moves across the patient as it delivers radiation. In addition to shaping the beams and aiming them at the target from several angles, in this therapy, the intensity of the beams can also be adjusted to limit the doses of radiation reaching nearby normal tissues.
Further, SBRT is also known by the names of the machines that deliver the radiation, such as Gamma Knife, X-Knife, CyberKnife, and Clinac. This therapy makes use of the advanced image-guided techniques to make delivery of large doses of radiation to a precise area. The proton beam therapy treatment focuses on beams of protons instead of X-rays on cancer. This means that proton beam radiation is capable to deliver more radiation while doing less damage to nearby normal tissues. However, it may also have some side effects.
