LAKEVILLE AND SAVAGE, MINNESOTA - Lots of new parents wonder at what age their children should be started on an oral care routine.

The answer is simple- it begins at birth. After all, getting started on the right foot can pave the way for a lifetime of healthy teeth, said Cosmopolitan Orthodontics specialist Dr. Trudy Bonvino (http://www.cosmoortho.com/), who specializes in children and adult braces.

"Good oral care actually starts even before a baby's first teeth appear," says the Savage and Lakeville orthodontist (http://www.cosmoortho.com/about-dr-bonvino.php).

Bonvino has several tips for parents to help them ensure that their children's teeth are healthy when they erupt, and they continue to remain that way as their children grow.

• After each feeding, wipe the baby's gums with a soft washcloth.
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for babies with water only. Do not use toothpaste.
• Use a cleanser designed for cleaning a baby's teeth and gums.

Once a baby reaches a year old, parents should brush teeth that have erupted in the morning and at night. Once a child's teeth have grown in to the point that they touch each other, it is time to add in a flossing routine, said Bonvino. Flossing should be performed at least twice weekly, according to the Australian Dental Association (http://www.ada.org.au/babiesandinfants.aspx).

"This is an important step, because once the teeth are touching each other, food particles can become lodged between them, which can promote the growth of bacteria and development of plaque," she said. "I recommend that parents contact their local pediatric dentist (http://www.isnare.com/?aid=649769&ca=Medical+Business) for more information on when to take their child to his first dental visit."
